WoW has basically crossed over Warcraft and Diablo (without all the clicking), kind of making a 3/4 IP out of each of them. Then there's Starcraft, which while I'm playing through SC2, I'm really, REALLY bored with it. It's got great polish, but it's the same essential game 10 years ago, with a graphical upgrade.
Blizzard is great at polishing games, but I'm starting to suspect that all of the talent that *really* made Blizzard stand out has moved on or gotten old and out of touch. Which is damn sad. |

Just by the length of the development its obvious it isn't shovelware That's not a good indicator of game quality. Some of the industry's worst games have taken the longest time to market or never come out at all. |

I think the reason that they never really deviate is that like someone else mentioned, they tend to sell their tech.
So if you start throwing out games in the popular styles of MW or what not who can you sell you're tech to? How many games were based off of Quake 2 and Quake 3 engines? 15 to 20? How much of a market would you have if you started making games other companies make and try to sell them your tech?
I also think Carmack and Company enjoy giving the community something to mod off of. I applaud them for the openness and helpfulness they have shown the mod community throughout the decades.
Where would many of the popular franchise be today without the willingness of id to share their knowledge? |

I'm not really following the QuakeCon stuff too closely...but I just saw someone on Twitter say that Carmack just said Doom 4 will be using id Tech 5.
Not terribly surprising but interesting to hear him mention Doom 4 |

I didn't find Quake 2 to be anything like Quake 1. Quake 3, with it's heavy focus on multiplayer and mod friendly capabilities was a completely different beast. Doom 3, for all of it's technological bells and whistles, was certainly more involved in presenting an experience than Doom 2 was.
Out of everything, Doom 1 and Doom 2 stand out as being the most similar in my memory. Much like Evil Dead and Evil Dead II are practically the same damn movie.
Sure, all of id's games have similar game play, much in the same way that nearly all FPSs have similar game play to me, with only a few standout moments here and there to distinguish them from one another. Maybe id hasn't taken some of the big risks that other companies have in terms of stretching outside of their comfort zone, but Rage doesn't seem like the safe bet to me. |

Err, apparently Tumbler hasn't looked at Rage much. It's got indoor areas, yes, but it's also got large, supposedly free-roam outdoor parts as well. Racing game? Why yes, that's actually a large component of Rage.
Yes, iD's made pretty much the same games since they did the original wolfie. They're leaving the corridors (for the most part) and trying outdoors, and if the framerate holds up, it'll be yet another technical marvel. Not expecting the story to hold up, but I DO expect that the gameplay will be rock-solid.
So yeah, Tumbler, iD IS trying something new. They aren't quite ready to completely step out of the genre they created, but for once, they ARE trying to make a DIFFERENT game. |

These guys have not been impressive in their comfort zone. I think they need to get out of that area and try something new. Rage was more interesting when I though it was a racing game. Do something different. Make an RPG, make a racing game. Don't make another FPS. I don't think you have what it takes to compete in that arena at this point. The competition is so much better than what we've seen from you I don't see how you can compete. That's because id has always been more about tech than design. Carmack is the best there is for it, but let's face it no one has ever played an id game hoping for some wonderful story and grand adventure. All their games are essentially the same with new tech and new skins. |

While I enjoy throwback as much as the next guy, id has not really advanced with the rest of the industry. I stopped caring about whizbang mirror reflections and lighting stuff awhile ago when it become apparent their titles gameplay was still rooted in the gaming industrys version of the stone age.
I really hope they change this with Rage because otherwise they've lost all relevance. |
