StarCraft II is Year's Biggest PC Game Launch

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty sold more than a million copies in 24 hours and 1.5 million copies over the first 48 hours of availability, announces Blizzard. They say this makes the real-time strategy sequel the biggest PC game launch of the year, and that this sets a record "for fastest-selling strategy game of all time."

Custom content is my one complaint with the game right now. It's a mess to put it bluntly. Blizzard's listing page heavily favors the top50 but at the same time makes it harder for entries to climb to those numbers. The publishing process itself is cumbersome and there is a 20mb limit for maps. The elimination of chat rooms makes map communities web-centric instead of battle.net focused which seems very backwards given the in-game friends functionality. In general I don't think they fully thought out the whole idea of chat room removal, there are some aspects to gaming communities which chat rooms are not only ideal but the most efficient method of organization.

Thankfully it's early and they have some time to fix this stuff up. I just hope they take a pass at it sooner rather than later. The editor itself is quite complex and deep, I've only barely begun to scratch the surface. Assuming the author doesn't do it himself, I'm planning on porting ZoatorTD.

Well, as a one-stop shopping sort of thing for all things Starcraft2, any of these may be a good place to keep an eye on:

http://starcraft2.filefront.com/
http://www.moddb.com/games/starcraft-ii
http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/starcraft2/

Personally, I bookmarked all 3, since even though there will be some overlap, each will still contain files not found in the others.

Moddb is my favorite because mod makers will keep regularly updated progress reports on their mods in development, and you can track your favorites and receive notifications of updates.

I havent even ventured into looking for mods yet...is there a "go to" website for everything?

I'd like to get that Chess mod that I saw on Kotaku, assuming it has been released.

People on the fence about multiplayer should consider that "multiplayer" is not just limited to 1v1 skirmishes or even team skirmishes for that matter.

Multiplayer includes a very broad range of games built using the map-editor. Casual games like Nexus Wars, Turret Defense, Evolves are a fun distraction. I played Nexus Wars for the first time last night and ended up so engrossed that I didn't realize I had been playing it for 3 hours. This is just the tip of the iceberg too - I've heard of Mario Kart re-makes, Metal Slug re-makes and R-Type re-makes being built.

$60 is going a long way for me.

Keep in mind, in those 12 years we saw Diablo 2 + expansion, Warcraft 3 + expansion, World of Warcraft + 2 expansions, and at least 2 canceled games (that we know of).

It's not like they've been doing nothing. They never had a huge staff (by industry standards) until World of Warcraft became as big as it did.

PC gaming needs a few more Blizzards to be really strong.

Yeap, agreed 100%. Wish HL3 would come out already, dammit.

Wrong formula. The correct formula for Starcraft sales is (us+eu)*(korea^3). It may well end up somewhere around a googleplex sold.

No suprise that sc2 is biggest pc game in a while, however what will spike the sales is the fact that due to the lame region block this game comes with people who want to play with friends from another region will have to buy more than 1 copy of the game. (yes no lan so that wont work either). So not only is it selling well but people are screwed by region block and if they want to play across regions vs others they need to buy more copies of the same game. People dont seem to complain enough about this and what may happen is more publishers will do this. Have fun playing next fps game with region blocks.

$60 dollars for a PC game? I will never pay that much no matter which game it is. Could I afford it? Easily. What I won't do is allow game companies to establish a trend with my money. If everyone else is fine with paying one hundred dollars for games with in the next five years have at it. Not me.

$50 max. $45 much more likely. $40? I'd let em poke me in the eye.

Final mission is pretty easy really. I got owned by the Zerg with the Artifact at 50% because I underestimated how quickly Kerrigan would take out my 3 bunkers in the top middle of the map. And I confused the Artifact Charge % with the charging of the ability (even though it was telling me I could use it). Also quickly realized how valuable Siege Tanks are on this mission. I still got the achieve for killing 150 Zerg with the artifact (this achieve was too easy) before restarting the mission.

I restarted, basically walled off both entrances to the base with bunkers (loaded with marines, marauders and firebats), followed by about 3 Siege Tanks at each entrance, then 3 more on the cliffs of the middle area. The 2 you put at the northern cliffs, and left most bunker you will have to keep replacing. Make sure you keep some units in the middle of your base (Banshees work nicely) to take out the Nydas Worms (sp?). Don't forget to use Artifacts ability...Horner practically tells you when to use it, otherwise keep an eye on the mini-map, use it when Kerrigan gets close and you are swarmed, then your units can focus on taking her down more quickly, limiting the damage she does to your defenses. Thor's are handy to use their Barrage ability as waves come in as well.

So in short, stack your defenses, and there is no need to attack. Just defend until the Artifact finishes charging to 100%, game over.

Looking forward to trying for the achieve in Hard mode on this... using the Artifact no more than once.

Some press sites are saying that the campaign is accessible enough that anyone can enjoy it. Do you agree?
So yes the single player campaign is accessible enough for a new player. And the difficulty can be changed at any time, mission to mission.

This is the saving grace I just got my butt handed to me in the final mission (or next to it), so I think I'll reduce to easy for this one, and come back and replay when I get some practice in. So far I've been able to beat everything on normal, and some on hard too.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it! Sounds good, might have to pick it up. Is Blizzard the only option if you want to pick it up digitally? Any benefit to buying it direct?
Yes, they are. No there isn't. All blizzard wants is the CD key, then its forever associated with your blizzard account and you can redownload it and install it on as many computers as you like (can only play on one at a time). And the prices on digital and retail are the same. So might as well get it boxed if boxes are at all interested to you. For me, I made an exception and bought my 2nd or 3rd boxed game in like 5 years for the CE of this, since its an epic game. I think my last boxed game was fallout 3 CE, and before that probalby UT2k4 CE. In fact, my gift certificate from ut2k4 was so old, they had to reissue it to me (thank goodness for california's laws about them never expiring).

Nobody is talking about the game being great just because of the CGI movies, except you. I don't base a games enjoyment on the cutscenes...However, they are great, not all are CGI, most are in-game engine cutscenes and they are great too.
I have been talking about the CGI in a few threads. Its not great "just because" of that, but thats a major part of it for me. In SC1 you only got a cutscene start and end of each campaign. In this game you get one start and end of each MISSION. In SC1, enough people were into the cutscenes that blizzard sold a DVD with them in a high resolution.
So while it would not have made the game good to me if it sucked except for CGI, it makes a great game much better in my eyes.

I know you were responding to someone else, but I figure I'll use it to throw in my 2 cents about it

There have been other games listed at $60 for PC. Consoles are even more. Blizzard isn't the first.
I've waited for games to drop in price before, but I get the feeling its going to be a long wait with SC2.

Guys, I really suck when it comes to RTS. But even I have a blast playing the campaign on "normal" difficulty. I had to slow the game speed down starting with the 5th mission (yeah, I know, I know, but otherwise I'd lose - unlike the AI I can't command every single separate unit simultaneously, and did I mention that I suck when it comes to RTS?), but even if it takes me hours to win some of the missions, it's great. Absolutely great. Wonderful cutscenes, good story (told even within the missions), very clever change of mission of styles, and so on. I've just started playing the most likely final Protoss mission. Why is it that everybody keeps saying "it's a third of the game, you only play the terrans"? It's wrong! There's about as many missions as in the first Starcraft, I got to play the terrans and the protoss up to now, and this game is polished, polished, AND polished. Except for this hell of a bug that fried some people's gfx cards - Blizzard, how came you didn't see that one during the beta?! Nevertheless, this is a great game, no matter what the haters say. If you play five PC games this year, Starcraft 2 should be one of them. And no, I'm not getting paid to write this.
Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.
