Irrational Announcement Next Week

Irrational Behavior Episode 7 Part 1: Calm Before The Storm offers the announcement of an upcoming announcement from Irrational Games. They play back a bunch of the guesses from their recent guess request, which are far more amusing than one might have suspected at first. They go on to reveal their plan to announce their next project next week, saying they will launch a CGI trailer for the game on August 12. To raise expectations, they also describe how excited they are to be able to unveil this game, which has been in development for a couple of years now.

System Shock and Bioshock have a lot of similarities, but the underlying themes are really pretty different. For example, references to tension between biology versus technology run all the way through SS2.

I'd love a new SS game, but don't think it's too likely. Hell, I'd settle for SS2 on GOG with the user-created high-poly model pack added, and made compatible with Win7 64bit. I'd be all over that.

Is this the announcement to reveal whose idea they stole who guessed right in their "call us and tell us what you think we're working on!" gig?

If so... *three dismissive wanks*

...and Bioshock was basically System Shock underwater.

For me, it was not even close to being a "successor" to the System Shock series. I was so disappointed that I quit playing in the middle of Bioshock and uninstalled it. I never even tried Bioshock 2.

Ken Levine didn't join Looking Glass until around Thief II, I think. So, he had no part in the Ultima Underworlds and System Shock 1. System Shock 2 came out just before Looking Glass went belly up. It basically split into 2 factions... Irrational Games headed by Ken Levine and another guy... and Ion Storm with Warren Spector.

Given the success of each faction's "next game" Deus Ex by Ion Storm vs. Freedom Force by Irrational Games... I'd have to say most of the talent went with the Ion Storm Faction.

Basically what I'm saying is... a "Shock Successor" without Warren ain't a "Shock Successor"... and even though it makes me cringe... I'm betting "Epic Mickey" will be better (In an "American McGee's Alice sort of way).

Swat 5

Please

That's about as likely as a new System Shock unfortunately. Activision Blizzard owns the rights to the SWAT franchise and as others have said, Take-Two owns Irrational. The SWAT franchise did OK but wasn't the kind of massive smash hit that Bobby Kotick demands to be considered a success so I imagine that series is dead for a while. I suppose he could always make a Call of Duty themed game out of it. /shudder

I'm still holding out for the next freaking Freedom Force.
I know they own that IP.

There's only one horror game I'm eagerly awaiting, and that's Amnesia.

Irrational was working on a zombie-themed, squad-based, survival-horror-shooter a while ago. Given the popularity of zombies these days, it wouldn't surprise me if the project was revived (all pun intended).

Agh, you are right. I had forgotten about it, but I hope it is not that. I am INCREDIBLY fed up with zombies by now. It more worn out than even Space Marines and WW2 games.
Double Bear's upcoming ZRPG is the only zombie game I can consider playing, and even that has to be pretty damn good.

Personally I hope to see something new and interesting instead of Yet Another Sequel.

I think you are confusing this with your midnight porn browsing.

Ok, I know people love certain games and wish for sequels, but isn't it fun to see something new once in a while? And Irrational don't own the rights to many of the series people have mentioned here, so it is highly unlikely that this is what the annoucement will be about.

Personally I hope to see something new and interesting instead of Yet Another Sequel.

EDIT: Put it in a less trollish way.

Matter of fact I never played SS2 solo, it was with my gf and we loved it.

I can't really imagine playing SS2 with another player. It seems like it would completely ruin the mood and tension. Survival-horror is best played alone, at night, in a poorly lit room. The very presence of another player is an immersion-breaker for me and immersion is an essential part of horror.

Or add friendly Coop to it like SS2 did.

That separated it from the pack then and would now. Matter of fact I never played SS2 solo, it was with my gf and we loved it.

BTW Diablo and SS2 were her introductions to gaming. Nice huh?

Doesn't EA own the rights to System Shock?

Yup. There's no way this is going to be another System Shock, given that 2K owns Irrational and EA owns the SS franchise.

I'm pretty sure we'll never see another System Shock. Dead Space has the space-horror niche filled for EA and Bioshock was basically System Shock underwater. If EA decided to make a new System Shock, they'd have to make sure it was different from both Dead Space and Bioshock, resulting in a game that bears little to no resemblance to System Shock.

Come on Irrational.

Tell us you put all the legal pieces of the puzzle back together. Tell us you've been putting your heart into its revival. Tell us it's not your take on the original but the real deal.

Come August 12th, that trailer needs to end with a female mechanized voice saying "Look at you, hacker" before fading to black.

//fingers crossed
//fingers crossed!!
//unlikely
//fingers crossed!

That would be incredible, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.
