I fail to see any wisdom in releasing an alpha quality client to paying customers. 1% will recognize what an alpha is, and the rest will just be upset that the game isn't running good at all. Anyone that would be aware of NS2, pre-orders the special edition, and is interested in playing an alpha, knows what an alpha is.
Stardock releases its game like this too. Let's the fans be a part of polishing and balancing the game to something great. They plan on doing nearly weekly updates from here on out.
Sadly I've already seen a handful of people complaining "how dare they release the game in this state. We're paying customers!!!!!11" and demanding refunds. It's almost like they think that devs finish the game months/years ahead of time for some reason. |

Just keep in mind that this is a small indie team, without a publisher. This is not Infinity Ward or DICE.
This game has a strong fan base and many are still around that played the original HL mod which was released in 2002.
The team is dedicated. They didn't just port it to Source and made some high res textures. They built their own engine and tools and are making damn sure this game will be mod friendly through LUA. |

If we were talking about a mainstream game like CoD or Gears of War, I'd agree. But NS2 is extremely niche and anybody who even knows what it is at this point probably knows what an alpha is. |

Yea, for an alpha it's in good shape. The Connecting to servers is what this is about getting hammered out, but once that's fixed I think the feedback will be really good for the final game.
A lot of the people that preordered it I think know what they're getting into with the alpha. Also since it's such a small team, this is about the only way to really test and work on stablizing the code across a wide base of computers. |

Look at UT3. They released an alpha-quality demo for free, and it sunk the game. |

| If anyone is having a hard time playing a game remember you can create your own game. Granted it'll be empty but you get to mess around and see everything that there is in the alpha. |

Apparently if you used a yahoo email for your account you haven't received a key yet.

A guy in the thread just solved it:
Ok this worked for me .... just add store@unknownworlds.com to your address book and BAM it will be there in 2 seconds. So I did that, and then did my 10th or so retrieve, and it showed up. For some reason the others didn't go into Spam like you would expect they just never showed up at all.

We're seeing some sort of connection problems and what looks like high-latency, which we've never seen before. Anyone have any clues? 7 minutes ago via TweetDeck
From their twitter.
In other news, regular edition now costs $35 |

| Same here. Once it took a while and connected to a server that wasn't the server I told it to connect to (had many less players) and it was laggy as all get out. Alphas are fuuuuuuuuuun. |

Yeah, getting that problem too, it seems the devs are aware but hey, it's alpha, we can't expect stability at this point. |

Got mine but it doesn't work....I just get the "awaiting connection" dialog anytime I try to connect to a server and it just sits there. |
