Cliffski/Epic Part 3: Mark Rein Apologizes

Following Positech Games CEO Cliff Harris' story of being heckled by Epic's Mark Rein at the Develop conference and a brief follow-up, Develop now has the text of an apology letter to Harris from Mark Rein. Here's a bit:

First of all I want to apologize. It was completely rude of me to interrupt your panel with my opinion no matter how well intentioned. I'm supremely passionate about the plight of indie developers, and game developers in general, and I heard something I thought was incorrect advice and I just couldn't keep my big mouth shut. But there's no excuse for bad manners. You called me on it and it made me realize that it is a behavior I need to try and change for these types of events in the future.

It's not like some great injustice was being done and needed commentary from me. I was just being a jerk.

But I did want you to understand that it was not my intention to criticize the fact that you reply to your fans' emails or discourage anyone from doing that. What caused me to speak up was when I heard you talk about revealing important news items about games through 1-on-1 emails and in forums. My opinion is that doing so runs the risk of these things no longer being 'news' when you need to use them to get publicity for your game.

@Beamer
Since you ordered your points so neatly, I shall do the same with my responses.

1) And I'll call it The Google if I damn well please.
2) I also wanted to eat his head.
3) And all he's doing is saving face. I'm not convinced, impressed or overtly concerned, but I will state my piece.
4) Frankly I have no problem understanding why he would be there. However I feel he has long forgotten what it was to be indie.
5) Yeah, but plight means you stand out. Last I checked, that defined most folks in middle class. Mark Rein ain't in that class.
6) You have no fucking idea what talent scouting means. Checking your competition out, looking for up and comers, keeping an eye for viable investment opportunities for your company, etc. If you think these things were not on his agenda...
7) Don't make assumptions about people you don't know. It'll define you as the sort of douche filled fuck tard we all love to hate.
8) Honestly, don't act like the UDK is anything other than an SDK? Christ this list is hysterical.
9) I don't know what you're point here is. I already stated that he's a sales and faceman. I'm not sure there's an argument occurring here so I'll let it be.

In the meantime: High five for forum skirmish about this topic on Bluesnews!

So he apologies and then gives dick advice again. This guy should just shut his mouth at all times.

It actually seems like good advice to me. He's saying that instead of revealing information in an informal way that indie developers could instead use that as a vehicle to get the word out about their games... that's hard logic to argue with. They can still communicate and be personal with their fans while using that news to make more fans for the future.

Problem being is most sites won't pay attention to you until you're popular. It's the chicken and the egg issue. Become popular and get exposure, get exposure to get popular. It applies to all levels, from getting your game reviewed to getting a PR release posted on news sites for a game release.

Same applies for getting your game on Steam, unless your game stands out to the reviewers at valve.

Review sites, News sites etc... want eye balls, they get eye balls with what is popular so if you're a little nobody you won't bring eye balls unless it's a slow news day.

Though I find blues covers a bit of everything, which is why I am here =)

How is "Rein" pronounced anyway? Is it the same as "Rain"?

Yes. It also a word in and of itself, and a homonym for rain. As in you would "rein" in someone in your company for making a public faux pas.

Tanto Edge, that was one of the least informed posts I've read here.

1) Calling it "the UE3" is like grandpa calling it "the google."
2) I'm shocked that you think an insanely good salesman is instantly replaceable. You're just desperate to make someone you dislike out as worthless despite having no clue and really being wrong.
3) It doesn't matter what he meant, true. What matters is how he went about it. WHICH IS WHAT HE APOLOGIZES FOR. FLAT-OUT, PLAIN ENGLISH APOLOGIZES FOR!
4) What was he doing there? Well, for one, it was the Develop Awards. It was a large conference. This was one panel. Considering that Epic started as one person in a garage and Mark was something like employee #3, I think he knows indie gaming well. It's changed since, but if anyone wants to know how to become rich on indie games taking a look at Epic's history isn't a bad way to go (making a fart game for the iPhone is probably better, though.)
5) "Plight" means that being an indie developer isn't easy. Where does your money come from? Your funding? Where do you get released? It's not an easy thing, which is why they're not springing up everywhere yet.
6) You have NO FUCKING IDEA what the event was if you think he was there talent scouting. For one, I don't think Mark has much to do with Epic's hiring. You know, the recruiter and people responsible for developing probably do that. For another, can you really bar him from an event where he receives a reward? Probably not.
7) This was a panel and he was in the audience. Panels are moderated and don't tend to be very interactive. Have you ever been to a game conference, or any conference with panels? Doesn't sound like it. You have no idea what the hell this thing was.
8) Honestly, you think Valve has done anything remotely similar to UDK? Or any developer as of yet? The only "big" players in that area are Unity and Epic.
9) Send an email to Mark claiming to be a small studio interested in UE3. I guarantee he calls you by the end of the week.

Your entire rant is nothing but ill-informed hate for one man. It's shocking that you filled a paragraph that large with so much cluelessness about even such a simple thing as what the Develop Conference that held this panel actually was.

I do even if the shameless self-promotion nearly overshadows the product completely. Although obscuring a mediocre product with a huge ego is probably advantageous..

Accessibility doesn't mean the best. Besides, what in gods name does the UE3 have to do with Mark Rein being an ass??? The UE3 can be as good as it gets, Mark is still an asshole and if he got hit by a car tomorrow, he'd still be an asshole, just smeared, replaceable and the UE3 would live on!

Besides, I'm claiming that I and everybody else shouldn't give a flying shit about Mark and his 'claims' of 'what he meant'.
It doesn't matter. What's he doing at this indie assembly? What's he doing scoffing at the panel?
Why do indies suffer some 'plight'? I mean what kind of 'apology' is that?
"I'm sorry I called you a fucktard. I realize now that even though you are a fucktard, it was a really insensitive thing to say, and I'm sorry."
Does that fly in your social circles? I should think not.
I think it's pretty damned obvious what he meant, means and why he was there.
He was feeling out their territory, scouting for hot talent, and frankly I feel he should be barred from entry to these events.
I don't feel he has anything to offer indies in terms of know-how or tutelage. He's never been an indie (unless you count submitting a resume to id software), he's a friggin marketing guy, and completely replaceable as faceman.

All that aside, CryTek is bringing their engine to the masses in the same way, and as time goes, so will id Software (the original purveyors of community editing tools), and Valve has been doing it long before Mark Rein and his band of nitwits ever started providing jack shit to the community. Don't try to sell Rein on the merits of a product. Besides, are you trying to tell me and the rest that Rein is gonna get on the horn to try and sell me on using UE3? Highly doubtful. I doubt the guy gives a fuck about any of the licensees currently using that engine. I'm sure he cares about 'all of them' though, because who else pays his salary?

Fuck Rein. Vice Presidents of Large Development Companies have nothing to offer indies, unless we're talking publishing and deadlines.

He never said his opinion was wrong, and Cliffski never had a problem with his opinion.

He said his method of offering his opinion was very wrong. That was the issue.
