Guild Wars 2 "Defeat" Explained

There's a post on healing and death on the Guild Wars 2 Website where ArenaNet designer Jon Peters explains how death and resurrection will work in Guild Wars 2. He explains that defeated players will be downed, but not dead: "Rather than being presented with immediate failure, when a player loses all of their health in Guild Wars 2, they are put into "downed mode." In this mode, the player has a number of downed skills they can use to target enemies and fight for a chance to survive. A downed player can still be attacked, which will send them into a defeated state, leaving them to either wait for an ally to resurrect them or to resurrect at a waypoint." Sounds sort of like the whole "Fight for your Life!" deal from Borderlands or getting knocked down in L4D, which seems to work pretty well.

So unless these 'downed mode' skills are far superior to what you normally have, this is essentially a double death.

You'll 'die' once by trying to fight something tougher than you can handle, which will put you into what's undoubtedly a weaker 'downed mode'...continue to be attacked while trying to fight back against the same thing that just beat you while you were at full strength ...and shortly be killed again. At which point it's a pretty standard death penalty in terms of time sink.

Pretty cool there's no healing classes, nothing more frustrating than a healer spamming someone you are trying to kill.

Every time I read one of their articles I want this game even more. I'm tempted to load up Guild Wars just for memories sake.

Death penalties make death in-game a more tense experience. It just isn't fun. We want to get you back into the action (fun) as quickly as possible. Defeat is the penalty; we don't have to penalize you a second time.
