Firaxis Firings

Approximately 20 employees at Civilization V developer Firaxis have been let go, reports Kotaku, having confirmed this with Firaxis parent company 2K Games. "I can confirm that Firaxis has realigned its development resources in order to streamline its development process, reduce costs and maximize the overall performance the studio," 2K global PR director Markus Wilding told them. "This will result in the elimination of approximately 20 positions. These reductions will not impact Firaxis' ability to create and deliver AAA titles, including its forthcoming Sid Meier's Civilization V and Sid Meier's Civilization Network for Facebook." They add an unconfirmed rumor to the mix, saying they've also heard that Jesse Smith was let go last month, calling him "a producer on both Civilization IV and a yet-to-be-named secret project." Thanks joao.

Definitely NOT true. Of course depending on what you wanna do..if your an engineer or programmer or 'lead' but the industry sucks right now. Employers also can pick and choose very very aggressively so dont expect to get a job 'in a few months'

Mine is art related field. Don't know about programmers tbh. I am not expecting anything, i am not in entertainment sector. But i can't find a single concept designer or modeler that i know that is looking for a job. Some fresh out of school.

So go figure...

I was totally going to comment on how they like to use sugar coated words like "realigned" and "maximize performance" lol.

He doesn't have much choice.
If he says "well, these people just weren't as good at their job as we needed them to be" then they come back and sue.
If he says "well, we're in a bit of a rougher spot right now and needed to cut back some costs" then everyone thinks they're in financial trouble and anyone they have debt to comes collecting.

PR speak is devoid of humanity.

So technically this isn't a bunch of firings, just layoffs, yes?

Firaxis is established enough that they don't do binge-hires then layoffs.

Either this is fat trimming, or they've canceled the as-yet announced project.

If they canceled it I will probably be more bummed than I ever have about a product cancellation. Not too happy hearing this...

Is it really this bad all around? I thought industry was growing.

Nearly every publisher and developer has job openings. A skilled person probably has no problems finding a new job after being let go.

I was hinting at that with the question. I am in LA, and there are more positions open here than you can shake a stick at. Most of my friends with average skill find jobs in just a few months. Really talented ones pick and choose.

So maybe Firaxis is just trimming off the fat?

I don't know about the rest of you but this news makes me wary of how good Civ V is going to be.

I do hope the people fired find something better though. The gaming industry seems to have no soul.

Reason #429 to not work in the game development industry.

Turn & burn, hire & fire that's the name of the game in game development. Unless you are one of the most amazing & talented people in the office you will be let go when the project is completed. But devs knows this already so....
