Blizzard on Real ID

Blizzard tells Gamasutra they are "definitely listening to player feedback" about Real ID, and the recent revelation that this would require the use of "real names" to post to the StarCraft II forums (though they admit that any name can be registered, though it will be associated with your unique CD key). So far the outcry from fans would indicate the program is not receiving the reception they hoped for: "Real ID is a new and different concept for Blizzard gamers -- and for us as well -- and our goal is to create a social gaming service that players want to use." In any event, it doesn't sound like they are reconsidering the plan, as they explain its optional nature. "It's important to note that both enabling Real ID in game and posting on the official Blizzard forums are completely optional," the Blizzard rep said. "Players can continue to read the forums anonymously regardless of whether they choose to post in them, and their gameplay experiences will not change if they choose not to use the Real ID communication features in game."

Agree with Beamer here. People are assuming the principle that most, if not all, people on those forums are sane and well-mannered. I think the opposite is the truth, most people playing WoW are downright fucking insane.

There have been more than a few cases worldwide of gamers killing gamers because of stupid shit. WoW players aren't exactly known to be the most sane players in the world and I do hope that nothing truly dreadful happens from this.

I haven't read this whole thread yet. No time! But I guess this is about what can happen if people know eachother's first and last names? From the moment Real ID came out I couldn't fathom how this assault on privacy and anonimity could ever be accepted. Everyone in WoW now knows that my name is Vincent Poppelier. I don't care but I'm sure many do and I completely understand.

As for "most people playing WoW are downright fucking insane": I completely agree. I'm insane too. But I'm also well-mannered.

Add/Edit: Damn! I typed in my name in google and the first freaking page is ME! That IS scary! Damn, from now on I'd best be very very very VERY sweet to other WoW players.

Seriously though, what ASeven wrote.. many do have personality issues. It is NOT AT ALL UNLIKELY that if I piss another Dutch player off bigtime, he might wanna get me. Think about it.. have you never played an online game where somebody pissed you off so extremely much that you thought or said something similar to: "If he was my neighbor I would've [fill in your sick thoughts here]"? I know I have. I know my cousin has. I know my friends have. I know many people in general have. Will I ever truly do so? Of course not. But there indeed are those out there who definitely would.

Also: Don't forget that WoW people playing on the same server tend to live relatively close to eachother. Two years ago I met someone in WoW who literally lived 5 minutes away from my house. He's become a friend, however.
