17. Facebook COO Says 'Email Is Probably Going Away' Jun 19, 2010, 23:47 Sepharo

Sandberg said that only 11% of teens use email daily.

Before college I probably sent only a single email every 6 months or so. The only time I ever logged in was to verify a website registration. Then in college I probably sent one email a week, mostly to professors to turn in assignments or to group members. But now in an office environment I probably send 5 or so emails a day.

I don't think there ever was a time when teens frequently used email.
BBS/newsgroups/Message boards and chat protocols have always been a more popular form of online communication.

Can't figure out why the whole world hates the USA? Read the first story. The fact that it is even being discussed is reason enough to hate you guys, lol.

Let's not overlook how this idea was proposed by Senator Lieberman (not Obama) and aims to grant the President (not just President Obama) this imaginary internet killswitch. If the headline said "Lieberman internet 'kill switch' proposed" it just would not be as sensational, nor would it invite anti-Obama discussion/foaming-at-the-mouth.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

If they have this power, it gives them a motive to use it. New Obama sex scandal? "Shut the Internet down!" His daughter doesn't like Facebook? Shut it down. He gets a nasty e-mail? Shut it down. History is actually filled with examples like that, when tyrants come to power.

For example... The 2009 swine flu wasn't a big deal, it wasn't unprecedented, but they declared a global level 6 emergency (unprecedented) which is the highest level they have and Obama backed it up. Level 6 emergency gave the WHO unprecedented authority, including things like forcibly injecting you with anything they want to with no legal recourse for you. (go look at the legalese)

The very notion that this is being seriously proposed shows the level of absurdity the feds are reaching.

No president is going to turn off the bread and circuses. The last thing they want you looking at is them. The internet, TV, and video games are the best distractions they ever had.

It is however a good way to keep the American public in the dark, lost and ignorant during a (supposed) crisis. This could be a major boon or detriment depending upon your objective and perspective. In short, it's just another control mechanism further enabling big brother.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

1) US announces it will take control of the Internet when they want.
2) Rest of the world says "Hmm, that's not good, let's develop our infrastructure so we're not reliant on the US".
3) The Internet becomes less centralised and more developed.

Win.

The only thing the US would be able to stop is access to US based services. Twitter, Facebook, Google ... life would go on. American businesses like those would be hurt far more than the rest of the world would be hurt. This is one 3 step plan where the 3rd step isn't profit.

It's never actually going to happen obviously. Does Lieberman ever actually do anything?

US President Barack Obama would be granted powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet under a new bill that describes the global internet as a US "national asset".
Um, LOL?

The internet isn't the property of the US to control. Any realistic suggestion of this being a plausable event would simply result in everywhere else removing reliance on the US networks.

The result is the US has more control over the US internet and less internationally.

If that wasn't possible, or hadn't been put in place yet and the US "switched off" the internet, they'd be open to really quite a lot of lawsuits.

Worst idea ever, AND most impossible idea ever. The idea that you can shut the entire internet down is just beyond ridiculous. Sure, much of the infrastructure is housed in the US, but several ISPs will simply tell the president to go fuck himself, and as soon as this idea becomes reality, the rest of the world will simply build their own DNS servers, and then Lieberman's pretty idea will only inconvenience 300 million Facebook users. All of whom will not vote for the moron the next time around.

Actually, this sounds like a great idea. Let's get cracking.
