Driver: San Francisco Announced

Ubisoft announces Driver: San Francisco, the not unexpected next installment in the Driver series of action/racing games, slated for release by the end of this year for Windows, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Word is: "Developed by Ubisoft Reflections under the direction of the creators of the original title, DRIVER San Francisco marks the return of the established video game series that has sold 14 million copies worldwide. Gamers will play as Detective John Tanner on a relentless manhunt for crime lord Charles Jericho through the hills of the City by the Bay. Thanks to a groundbreaking gameplay feature, players can now seamlessly “shift” between well over a hundred licensed vehicles, keeping them constantly in the heart of the action. With its timeless setting, unique car handling and renewed playability, DRIVER San Francisco will revitalize the classic free-roaming, cinematic car chase experience for the current generation of gaming platforms." The announcement is accompanied by a cinematic trailer from the game highlighting the return of Tanner as the game's protagonist that concludes with game of chicken on the Golden Gate bridge between a truck and a vintage Challenger that can't end well. The embedded version of the trailer follows.

damn you ubi!!!!! I love the Driver games. I have fonud them to be highly entertaining and the physics and driving was ahead of a lot of games at the time of it's original release. Drifting, jumping, car physics, was almost unheard of in other driving games. I still have all of the games and load up the ps2 stuff to do the crazy cop chases.

There is a lot of ideas and Driver type gameplay in a lot of games today. A lot of games took from it.

UBI? Damn. Rental or purchase on sale on console at best.

GTA4 set the bar pretty high. the last Driv3r was console crap, so they have a lot of work ahead... Almost forgot. Horrific DRM. Luckily, it will get 'shifted' from the game, much to the chagrin of UBI.

No desire or interest in playing games with draconian drm.

Ubisoft been fucking everything up lately, so we shall see.

Their press conference was pretty stupid. In the end I wondered why they even bothered having a press conference. They don't have anything big to show in my opinion, they should have stuck with basic booth's and gameplay clips.

Future warrior appears to be their biggest title but it looked stupid. Who wants to walk around invisible like that, that didn't look fun. I was bored just watching it. I hope they didn't build a whole game around walking up to people and shooting them while invisible....

The original was fun for what it was, and yes SF is probably the best locale to do a driving game.

I find it more amusing that Driver has somehow sold 14 million copies. The series just evokes mediocrity.

Sort of like Will Smith movies.

I dunno, I really loved the original, myself. It had a great action movie feel.

I've only played the first Driver and the only thing I would do is startup some sort of "scramble" mode where you are instantly being chased by 10 cops or so. Then I would proceed to drive down those steep San Francisco hills and watch above me as cop cars soared over my head in amazing crashes.

The irony that DRM would be stuck on a game which revolved around stealing vehicles and causing mayhem.

Oh wait, it's not stealing, it's 'shifting'...
