Dead Space 2 on January 25

EA announces a January 25 release date for Dead Space 2, including the PC as one of the target platforms for the horror-themed shooter sequel, something that was in in doubt as recently as February, though the PC version was mentioned in EA financials, and since. Here's word on the game:

In Dead Space 2, engineer Isaac Clarke makes his return in a blood-curdling new adventure on an all-new space installation known as “The Sprawl.” The lone survivor of a horrific alien infestation, Isaac finds himself confronting a catastrophic new nightmare. Battling dementia, Isaac will do whatever it takes to save himself and dominate the relentless enemy onslaughts. Equipped with a new arsenal of tools to dismember the necromorphs, Isaac faces the challenge head-on. Players will see Isaac fight bigger, scarier and more epic battles that will keep them on the edge of their seats.

I think Dead Space was relatively scary. Just like Aliens vs Predator was. The mere fact that you have a gun to shoot stuff doesn't automatically annihilate the scariness. That's simply a wrong perspective.

In Dead Space you weren't very mobile (in comparison with, say, FEAR) because you were in a heavy metal suit. There was no ability to spin around while in mid-air, or to kite enemies by keeping your distance. When an enemy popped up, he was coming for you and nothing you could do about it except focussing and doing your best to kill him before he got to you. That got me -- and with no doubt most others -- sitting on the very edge of my chair, holding my breath while having that certain sense of survival.

The same thing with Aliens vs Predator. I had a gun and I could even lob a grenade out if I wanted to, but the beeping on my radar saying those screaming murdering creatures advanced from 3 different directions got me, indeed, 'scared'.

But then, what could really scare anyone of our age if it's not something in real life? The last time I was truly scared was when I was 10 years old playing Resident Evil 1. And even the scariness of that game dulled out after being 1 hour ingame.
