Out of the Blue

Thanks to everyone who clarified that the horrible background noise during the World Cup games is unrelated to the tournament or the sport, but rather comes from horns called vuvuzelas, which are apparently a very popular noise-maker at sporting events in South Africa. There's a little hope, as this article (thanks ColoradoHoudini) says there is talk of banning them because of how irritating folks find them, with the captain of the French team saying it's actually hard to sleep because the vuvuzela playing begins at 6:00 am.

God knows I've tried to get into Soccer. It just doesn't click for me.

The TV studios could filter it out easily with 3 simple equalizer settings on the live-streams audio, heres hoping until the real World Cup games they have this fixed, or these horrible noise makers banned ;/

But why ban if the TV Audio can be filtered? Let them have their fun in the Stadium, but give TV-Watchers a proper Audio Quality too.

They are not a South African thing exclusively. I had a vuvuzela from one sporting event or another when I was a youngin some 15 years ago, and I can tell you I was never a raging fan of South African football.
