Rockstar: No Current PC Red Dead Redemption Plans

A comment from Rockstar Games to a post on their website has the latest on plans for a Windows edition of their western shooter Red Dead Redemption, or more accurately, the lack of such plans. Word is: "As of now, there are no current plans to bring Red Dead Redemption to the PC platform. If that should change, we will let you know." Thanks Big Download.

They should have Volition do the port. LOL. Just in case no one get's it---> Saints Row 2 PC anyone.

Volition outsourced the port of that though, and with Red Faction 3, which was done much better thank God.

I would think they could outsource it to one of the many Eastern Europe development houses that focus on PC games for relatively little money and still make a mint off the game, especially with Steam support and a strong European release. Despite current market environments on PC games top hits still sell a million copies if not way more, and a million times $50 is of course 50 million dollars... it can't cost that to port it.

The thing is, is that I don't think Rockstar or Take Two(?) get $50 * a million even if it sell that many copies. Of the $50 price tag, I'd think Rockstar/Publisher would be luck to get $25 of that money as profit.

Still agree that it could most likely be cheaply ported and still sell enough to make profit on AND still be enough fun for those PC game whom it works for to love it.

I can't think of any european development houses that could port a significant project like RDR. If people thought Rockstar did janky ports well....eastern european dev houses aren't known for their bug free titles either

Nothing worth doing is usually cheap. But I understand their strategy, they are trying to raise demand by creating a vacuum. I can wait, plenty of other fishes in the sea.

Hiring people costs a lot of money. You pay HR, you pay source deductions and then the employees themselves. Ideally you would farm this out to a port shop rather than hire in-house for a single project. I think you're greatly simplifying the porting process but one would hope that they would have a better handle on it now after having done so with an existing Rage engine game. Rockstar tends to change their mind with regularity, GTA4 wasn't going to have a PC version for a long time either. So who knows, maybe we'll get lucky. Looking at their list of upcoming games though I'm not filled with confidence

Rockstar devs on Gamasutra were telling people recently that they have no free bodies to port this, sorry fellas. They usually break in newer teams by porting older products but all of their people are committed to other stuff for the next two years. I hope something shakes out and they look at it sooner because I doubt they would bother 2 years down the line.

If that's the explanation why they won't make a port, I must say, that's pretty lame. I mean all the assets are done, all you need is a crew of a few skilled Russian programmers that modify the existing code, it's not like R* don't know how to do this since they've done it before.

"No, sorry, no time, I'm completely booked, I've got to buy my kid a Maybach Merc on Saturday for his 16th birthday and teach my dog to play golf on Sunday. Sorry, I just can't do it. Just get a console, you cheap SOB, and get off my back."

While I'm all for keeping local jobs alive, with so many people without a job, I'm just startled by such an excuse. Just hire more people you cheap SOBs.

That's really sad if true... I really would love to play the game but I have no interest in buying a console to do so.

Maybe I will order Gun and finally play that.

I really hope they change their minds because RDR is one of the better games I've played from this generation and its just screaming for a PC version. Sadly though when I look at Rockstars upcoming lineup I don't see how they would fit it in.

I can't think of a single open world game that isn't janky as all hell to be honest.

Farcry 2 is the smoothest one at launch I can think of, honestly, and even that game had some issues like stutter on DX10.

Red Faction Guerrilla is finally really smooth now, but it took two patches to do it.

Thanks for your poorly formed and misspelled thoughts Kosumo, as usual you have added literally nothing to a topic other than nonsensical rants more akin to insane asylum chatter.

Arg, you got me just before bed.

I think it's fair enough to say Rockstar aren't total disasters when it comes to PCs, and there's certainly potential for RDR to be a great port. But, quite a number of guys have issues with GTA4, and they're not guys with strange systems. I can personally run every game I have perfectly well, and I'm a dev who runs a lot of very touchy software. GTA4 is most certainly bugged beyond driver issues, or anything that simple.

GTA4 is surely a problematic port much like it was a problematic game even on it's native console platforms at launch. I had troubles with the 360 version for awhile and Rockstar didn't get a pass for them either but they did fix them. I picked up the PC port later on for the higher visuals and it was the same story, problematic release but they did fix them up. So I'd agree, it has some issues above and beyond but given the type of game it is, I'm a bit more willing to forgive some of the flaws. I can't think of a single open world game that isn't janky as all hell to be honest.

There are plenty of other companies who don't patch their products period who are far more deserving of our scorn.

Can't they all have our scorn?

Fair point

The comment wasn't about the game being bad. I've played it and like it, and would love it on the PC. It was about the way the developers are doing things at the moment, that result in more than janky-ass games. The games don't work at all (especially when you're talking about Steam), and there's no one around to fix them.

That's all fine and good, speaking of "bleedingly obvious" obviously everyone wants working games. Your example of GTA4 however was a poor one. They have tried to support that product and I'd argue that they did a decent job patching it. It was utterly broken at launch and now is playable for what I would wager is the vast majority of gamers who own it. I'm sorry if you continue to have issues but thats not just GTA4 but practically every PC game ever. User specific configuration issues always arise with every release. Rockstar has done good ports and they have done bad ports but I'm not going to write them off the entire platform for it. You also forgive one game for the same problems while berating another as I've pointed out.

Because of this, you might understand that it was frustrating when your posts consisted of taking every one of my points and posting the always impressive 10 year old tactic of pointing out the bleedingly obvious opposite alternative. "You don't like it? Don't buy it.", you said. "Well thanks for that genius. I never would have figured that out without your help.", I thought.

Except that you're ignoring everything relevant and focusing on a single portion of a reply. You also accused me of "having too much to say" or something equally childish, meanwhile your reply with that accusation was longer than any of my previous ones.

So, whether it was right or wrong to nitpick or be sarcastic, let's just accept we have differing opinions so we can both do something else. For me, sleep. Keep on nitpicking if you want, but it won't be something I'll respond to.

I get where the attitude comes from because PC gaming is largely a huge wasteland of console ports and MMOs these days but its misplaced in this case was my point. I mean, the whole announcement here in the first place is that they ARENT porting it anyways right now. So I understand the jaded sarcasm pc gamer guy bit but I don't accept it in this case. There are plenty of other companies who don't patch their products period who are far more deserving of our scorn.

Like how you have nothing better to do than post about how bad this game would be and blah blah blah?

Look, I'm tired and need sleep. I don't want to argue the pointless rubbish with you any longer. But, I'll say something because it's nice to try and end things.

The comment wasn't about the game being bad. I've played it and like it, and would love it on the PC. It was about the way the developers are doing things at the moment, that result in more than janky-ass games. The games don't work at all (especially when you're talking about Steam), and there's no one around to fix them. There's no need to argue against someone who wants a game that works. Only an idiot would try and argue that it's okay for any and every PC game to be broken. The PC may have a history of busted games and some people may even enjoy dealing with them, but it doesn't make them right, and it certainly doesn't make an opinion like mine invalid.

Your posts were a poitless nitpick against whatever I had said and was saying. Anyone can point out the opposites to any opinion, and all it does is drag out an argument for waaay too long... which was strange to see happening, because I hadn't actually argued anything. All I was doing was responding to the attitude and nitpicking tactic in your posts with my usual sarcasm.

So, whether it was right or wrong to nitpick or be sarcastic, let's just accept we have differing opinions so we can both do something else. For me, sleep. Keep on nitpicking if you want, but it won't be something I'll respond to.

That wasn't a personal insult. It was to ask if you like writing for no reason. Seriously, don't you have something better to do with your life than write up an essay trying to take down my passing comment?

Like how you have nothing better to do than post about how bad this game would be and blah blah blah? On a gaming forum we all have nothing better to do with our time am I right?

I have no idea why you're ranting away at me, but all I can conclude is that you're bored. Go play a game or something. You know, all those broken ones you like so much. Meanwhile I'll do the same with the ones that've actually been patched to work, instead of break.

Right up there with "it was for a study I'm doing on the Internet!" in terms of lameness. You are allowed to post but when other people do it, they are wasting their time and bored and so on. God forbid someone point out you were being a hypocrite or might be wrong. Next time I'll use crayons and lego since we're not allowed to write complete sentences.
