Fucks sake, what would it take to get a proper X-Com game.
And therein lies the source of the discontent. Civilization has had 4 sequels, not even counting the Call to Power series. Jagged Alliance has has an expansion (Deadly Games) a sequel, an expansion for the sequel, and a heavily modified version (Wildfire). Fallout has had a brilliant 2D isometric sequel and a mega-successful 3D game that is pretty damn good once modded up properly. Since 1994, aside from the not nearly as good TFTD, NOTHING has been done to recapture the original X-COM design in a more modern engine. Off-shoots are all well and good, but when there hasn't been a "proper" sequel, these 're-imaginings' and redesigns for new genres just grate on the fans who have been waiting for said sequel.
UFO Extraterrestrials comes pretty close, but the engine isn't exactly bleeding edge, and it takes a slew of mods to make it close enough to X-COM, and even then, it's only an imitation. UFO Alien Invasion is pretty cool, but it is a mod made using the quake 2 engine, so state of the art it's not. After 26 years, this is the best we can do? Seriously?
