Just Cause 2 ATI Issue

Just Cause 2 is broken using the version 10.5 ATI Catalyst drivers on systems with a Radeon HD 5970 graphics card and Eyefinity, reports [H]ard-OCP. They indicate the version 10.4 drivers will still run the Avalanche Studios' open world action sequel, and since AMD is aware of the problem, presumably it will be addressed by version 10.6.

For justice7 I would also say yes, it is more than more the hassles (which aren't quite as horrific as advertised).

That's hot. Does the distortion at the extreme left and right bother you? Is it hard to get used to it? I would think it would be too distracting to be worth it. I'm sure that kind of thing will improve with more adoption though.

Do you have BFMEII or RotWK? I modded those myself to work nicely in Triplehead. Downloads at WSGF.

Here is another very cool preview of what surround gaming does:

Even with that, though, if you ever have the chance to see a multi-mon setup live, go for it. You may want to revise your Christmas list.

If you've got the money for a monitor that actually runs at 2560x1600 (at least $800, occasionally a little lower on sale), you can probably afford a dual-GPU solution and the system to back that up. I just built a 1080p-Crysis-on-max SFF desktop for under $1500, but there's a big jump between that and playable on a 30" at 2560x1600, which is about double the number of pixels.

I think this might be due (at least in part) to the "new feature" they're "testing" that nobody likes. It causes a powerplay issue, but unlike previous drivers' powerplay issues, this one does not fix itself once you run a 3d app and then close it. The second card remains at 3d clocks.

Stick with 10.4a. 10.5 is full of problems for some reason.

--edit--
Cheese, I have the same issue with this game. I have to disable my nvidia card before running the game, or it goes, "oh, you want to run on your secondary card do you?" This caused all manner of performance issues since my 9600gt is nowhere near as powerful as my x2. I just set up profiles, so I can quickly switch between normal and Just Cause 2 mode. However, I'm pretty sure it's using both of my ATI GPUs.

5970 with ati modded 10.5 build 874 & GTS 250 with nvidia 257.15 beta drivers, yes indeed I have both the 5970 & GTS 250 working properly at the same time.

I did have problems with the whql 10.5 with this game, it would not recognize the crossfire or would report crossfire and only use one gpu on the ati card.

the other thing that caught my eye on this game is that when in hybrid mode (ati + nvidia) Just Cause 2 would default to only using the nvidia card, not both, strange because every other game to date works with both cards in hybrid mode.

with the modded 10.5 874 builds im getting my frame-rates back again and both ati gpus are being used.

the bokeh water effect that nvidia has is a very nice CUDA effect which ati doesn't have a answer for as of yet.

but... even said that I still prefer the speed of the 5970 card over the GTS 250 so I have a toggle switch (profile setting) to turn off the nvidia card just for JustCause 2 so it will default to the ati one.

I don't play this game but I am using 10.4 on my 5870 anyways because ATI increased voltages with these drivers it seems to compensate for multi monitor setup flickering problems/etc. BUT it seems even if one uses single monitor voltages are higher on my card this causes my idle/2d temps to be 3-4C higher on 10.5 vs 10.4. You may say, no big deal, but since on single monitor there is really no need for these higher voltages and higher idle temps ATI needs to fix this so that the voltages are rised only when card is being used with multi monitor setup. Stop being lazy ATI. Thanks.

Err, on the Concrete Jungle benchmark my 5850 averages 42fps at 1080p with everything dialed up to the max on a Core i7-860 OC'd to 3.6ghz, 4GB of ram and etc. It's a great engine and its decently scalable but its easy to see how a higher resolution setup or multi-monitor setup would require dual-GPUs. That's not to say a multi-monitor setup for anything but flight sims is necessarily sane itself but thats another topic entirely

On my 5850, with everything turned to max, the game benchmarks at 84fps avg at 1680x1050. So you've got to be running at about 8000x6000 in order to need a dual-GPU, methinks.

It's amazing how well JC2 runs. It's a fantastic engine.

Some people have super high resolution setups that literally require dual-GPU solutions. I'm not saying it's particularly smart or economical but this extreme niche is out there and does care about this crap apparently.

I can't see why anyone would want to run SLI / Eyefinity with all the problems these technologies have with new games.

Simply buy a high end single GPU and you will have next to no problems, and your frame rates will be plenty high enough to run on a high resolution.

The toys are nice, but really are they worth the hassle?
