Dragon Age Anime Movie Plans

BioWare and FUNimation announce plans for an Anime movie based on the Dragon Age franchise as a direct-to-DVD release next year. "We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature," said Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation. "We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created."

When people talk about "western animation style," what exactly are they referring to? Disney movies from 1930-1950? Flintstones? Loony Tunes? Scooby Doo? TMNT? Heavy Metal? Plague Dogs? Just as there are many styles of anime, there are many styles of western animation as well.

The current western animation trend is clearly inspired by anime but lacks the detailed animation which is anime's greatest strength.

Personally, I like a lot of what I've seen in anime. The art takes some getting used to, *snip*

That's because it's downright ugly (compared to western animation). The pro for using the anime style is that you can shit show after show after show after show out of your ass. Like I said, choosing anime is choosing the easy way out.

Sadly today's generation is used to nothing else but anime. If you ask kids about 2D animation movies, they wouldn't even know what the hell western animation looks like unless they've seen "Princess & The Frog".

I'm not surprised some anime movies/shows are good -- concidering that there are a trillion of them out there! I too have seen Dead Space and it was indeed entertaining. Would I have prefered seeing it in the western animation style? HELL YES (x20.000)!!!

I dunno...here are some anime that I think pretty much surpassed a lot of 'western' animation:

Eureka 7, Darker Than Black, Death Note, Voices of a Distant Star, Wolf's Rain, Samurai 7, D.Gray-Man, Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

Of course, your tastes may vary, but trying to lump all anime together and saying it's all this or all that, is extremely silly and narrow sighted.

Of course, I also closely look at story and character when I rate any show/movie I watch. A lot of western animations don't do much in the way of story development past the very simplistic. Not that there aren't some good ones, but I very much prefer anime these days.

People should only complain about the "milk it" schemes if the milk is sour. If it's good stuff then who cares?

Since we don't know how it'll be the rage seems early.

Actually I quite enjoy anime, and manga(and yes I can actually read it untranslated--too bad I can't get asian networks here then I'd feel more at home). Reading and watching both. But beside the point, my complaint is that BW seems to be slipping into the "milk it for all it's worth" mode under EA. Last time I totalled up all that DLC, it cost as much as the original game.

I'm happy to give them a boot to the head for general stupidity among other things.

The more I try out different RPGs the more I find them to be a complete waste of time. Real life is complex enough already.

People will just bitch about anything, won't they? Heaven forbid fans of the game get new material in any form.

Much as I enjoyed Dragon Age, I'm not terribly excited at this particular bit of extended universe. I'm usually not very much into fantasy, DA being an exception, and I'm not sure DA in a different medium will attract me nearly as much. Still, DA players who actually like fantasy on principle will probably get a lot more out of this then I will.

What I'd really like is to see this done for Mass Effect. Mass Effect has such a huge, well-fleshed-out setting with many opportunities for other stories than Shepard's. My biggest problem with the games is that, at times, Shepard's story is almost a little too epic and I find myself wishing for a look at people in the galaxy who are going about their futuristic business unhindered by knowing about the big awful truths.

Wish there were mod points, coz you would be modded up. Totally agree with you.. I dont see how Bioware has "sold out" because some animation house is making an Anime Dragon Age. Nerd rage is taking over for the silliest little things these days. In that case, iD sold out when they sold the film rights to Doom. Capcom sold out when they started the Resident Evil Film franchise. Blizzard also because theres a Warcraft film slated for 2013

So you all better not buy Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Diablo 3, Starcraft, and RAGE then because according to them, they all sold out.... Its easy money for the studios, and if that means money for them then it good for them... Less of the rage already!

Yeah...not seeing the reason for the rage. Until there's something to look at all I'm seeing is a bunch of ignorant comments. Hating anime because of the style is downright silly. There isn't ONE style to anime, and quite frankly if you had done any digging around you might have realized that there are actually a great number of fantastic anime movies out there that don't look like big-eyed kiddie garbage.

That said, I'm not expecting much either, but no point in throwing Bioware/FUNimation under the train until we see something to justify it. For all we know the anime could end up being fantastic.

BTW, FUNimation has done some pretty good stuff in addition to the regular garbage they've done. So who knows, it might actually be something fun to watch.

The art style from western animation mostly shut down when Disney killed off its 2D animation group in favor of computer/3D animation for years.

Anime remained popular in Japan during that time period and there are a still a lot of little studios doing it. If you don't like that style, well, you have Disney to blame for effectively killing the remains of the western animation tradition. It's only now starting to recover.

Personally, I like a lot of what I've seen in anime. The art takes some getting used to, but the stories go places that Disney wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Holy fucking shit. If there was any doubt remaining that Bioware has been completely consumed by EA, and utterly sold out, it should be gone now.

For those of you clamoring to say this should have no affect on their next game(s), that isn't really the point. It's the principle of the thing. A game studio, hopefully, is in the business of making great games, not whoring out whatever IP they have to earn every last dollar.

What a shame, Baldur's Gate 2 is easily my favorite game of all time.

It's the entire reason for creating an IP in the first place.

I don't get how this affects the games or why this news is making people upset. If it gets more people interested in DA in order to keep the series running, I think it would be a positive influence. Yeah, if they go with some final fantasy inspired art style, that will be wrong, but anime studios have a lot of versatility art wise that no one gives them credit for. The Animatrix is a good example, or something older like Akira, ghost in the shell etc.

If you only know pokemon, avatar, naruto, dragon ball z etc, I feel sorry for you.

I thought the anime for Dante's Inferno was really well done. I don't see how this wouldn't be good. If I'm not mistaken The Matrix had a series of anime shorts too which were very good. I think some of you are overreacting; like someone yelling "Cheetah!" in a crowded supermarket.

Considering leads from BW used to read and post here, along with the repeated reassurances that "nothing would change at bioware" All this does is scream "we sold out, for lots of monies, and snacks."

Well those were good days Bioware, guess they're gone now. Here's to indie studio's picking up where you left off.

Indeed.

What the HELL?!

I think they're choosing the easy way. Where is the artstyle from the old movies like Teddy Ruxpin, Gummy Bears, Fire & Ice (anyone seen that one? freakin' epic), and the old Disney movies like Aladin etc? Thát was nice to look at.

Anime... what the hell. I wonder if the characters are gonna do that little moan/gasp after every sentence and if the weapons are gonna be four times as big as the persons wielding them. I also wonder if the battles sound like there's some big hardcore porn orgi going on when you close your eyes.

Not excited.

Fail.

And yeah, I totally agree with you, MoreLuckThanSkill. Maybe I should make a little clip from the scene where Arnold the Terminator sinks into the molten metal, and where he puts his thumb up just before he completely vanishes into it.. as a metaphor how BioWare, although so awesome, got swallowed by evil thinking it was a good thing.
