I can't imagine Joss Whedon doing anything worthwhile with the Half-Life IP. He has a particular style of dialogue and editing he likes to work with and it wouldn't mesh with Half-Life at all. If they can attach a decent non-Whedon script then sure but at that point you might as well get a more worthy director too.

I loved Startopia. I was so sad that we never got another one. If it becomes available on gog.com or the like, I highly recommend picking it up.

If it is made into a film, it will be nothing like the games. Thankfully, that would be a good thing, because a carbon copy of Half-Life would suck as a film.

However, this is Hollywood. They will fuck it up in plenty of other ways.

Also, while I agree on all the mute protagonist comments, realize it doesn't have to feature Gordon Freeman at all. The film could be the struggle against the Black Mesa forces by resistance fighters. There would of course be one or two main protagonists, but they would be speaking roles. If you think about it, one man--Gordon Freeman--could not possibly have taken down such a vast expansive force on his own. There were other battles raging elsewhere, and the film may just as well depict that aspect of the conflict.

It could be cool. I won't cast this one aside just yet.

A big-budget Hollywood movie with a mute protagonist...? Ain't gonna happen.

Joss Whedon... Firefly was great. I can't get over it was canceled and I didn't watch until 8 years after it was canceled. I support him directing Half-Life.
Seconded, even if it looks like it's just a rumor.

Startopia was AWESOME. I am so sad to think that we never got another Mucky Foot game. I still listen to the sound track every so often. The game was my favorite city builder game hands down. It really was an accomplishment to complete all the missions.

I ALWAYS TURN OF MUSIC IN ALL GAMES. Startopia was maybe the only exception. (Well I think I kept Majesty on for a while)

ughhhhh anyone but Whedon, he writes the worst dialogue known to man.

I could see John Hillcoat doing a half Life movie at least he would understand the pacing, and he seems to have an interest in games.
I'm sure Joss Whedon's role in a movie based on a Valve game would be limited to directing. Erik Wolpaw will surely be doing dialogue on the screenwriting team from Valve.

They would likely go the route guaranteed to be a Box office success (mass action, explosions every 10 seconds, CGI everything, and bad one liners), rather than risk failure by doing something more creative or unique.

Agreed. Keep Micheal Bay as far away from this as possible.

From the comments this seems to have already been debunked…

Good. Its not that I wouldn't want to see a HL movie, its that I have no confidence in Hollywood's ability to make it good. They would likely go the route guaranteed to be a Box office success (mass action, explosions every 10 seconds, CGI everything, and bad one liners), rather than risk failure by doing something more creative or unique.

The game experience doesn't necessarily translate well. Part of the atmosphere in a game is dependent only the players ability to perform. You have to those precision jumps while pumping bullets into headcrab zombies, when you're watching an actor do it loses a lot of the tension.

While this sounds like ten pounds of bullsh*t, I would love to see a decent director tackle the game as a film. Especially if they made the protagonist not say a single word throughout the whole thing, but made sure people know he is not mute.

Or perhaps Gordon Freeman is actually mute, and everyone around him is far too polite to comment on it?
