A new Witcher 2 Developer Diary Trailer #1 from Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings featuring gameplay footage and narration from CD Projekt RED about their upcoming action/RPG sequel. Damn I have to fit the first Witcher back into my play log....I am pretty excited about the 2nd one. I didn't spend much time on the first, but have read both English translated books. Great books.

The story telling is different than your standard book. It is a series of short stories that are loosely put together to form a longer one.

Timed dialogue is in fact quite nice, if used correctly. The one and only thing "Fahrenheit" aka Indigo Prophecy has done right

But CD Project wants to use QTE in certain boss fights to show off their model animation skills. In early videos, you can see the stupidity of that idea. You fight the boss the usual way and suddenly, the interface vansihes and you have no more control over your character. Instead, a predefined ingame sequence starts and you have to press some buttons in the order the game tells you. Just think Dance, Dance Revolution going medieval. If pressed correctly, the game shows you some finishing moves and the fight is over.

And THIS is stupid, because winning is no longer a matter of using the right sword skill at the right moment, according to your chosen skill tree, fighting style and enemy type (no, the combat system in TW1 is nothing like QTE). Its just a matter of being a good monkey, pressing the correct buttons without having to think anything.

Besides combat in The Witcher 1 was quick-time event already, you had to click at a certain moment to continue the combo. So yeah, i think the complainers are just nitpicking, theres no real different whether dialog is timed or not, if you want to chill while playing use the pause key. The only real issue i see is that they mess up the PC Version with some console crap. But this is CD-Projekt and these guys supported TW1 properly.... so benefit of doubt.

Kajetan I hope you are wrong I really do because I would hate a console controller style interface for Withcer 2.
But you will probably get one.

CD Project wants to have its share from the console crowd. That's ok. Make a console game then. Like Firaxis did with Civ Revolution. Or Blizzard wanted to do with Starcraft Ghost. But in the process, they shit on their PC fanbase and that is unacceptable. A year ago, TW2 was an instant pre-order. Now, i expect the worst and will probably wait for a budget release or a Steam sale, if i didnt ignore it all together. You know, its just a game

Care to elaborate? I haven't been following this game much though I know it's supposed to be multiplatform.
First, the devs want to "enhance" bossfights with Quick Time Events.
Second, they want to "streamline" the combat and make it faster, less tactical, more simple button smashing.
Third, on the latest preview event, the devs showed parts of the game using a 360 controller, which is the main reason, why the interface and the gameplay has to be simplified and dumbed down. Not that console owners are dumb, but devs are too lazy to build two versions of the game, publishers to greedy to invest building two versions of the game.

TW2 will become "Invisible War 2" all over again!

Am i pissed? Hell, yes i am!

Importing your character's profile from the first game is the very definition of Roleplaying! +2 CD Projekt.

I was surprised how well The Witcher was received by the mass crowd because it had allot of flaws and you needed to be forgiving (at least at the first 2 chapters) not to bash this game to pieces. Don't get me wrong -- it didn't take me too long before I literally LOVED the game, I'm just surprised that the game was received as well as it did by the crowd of people who often seem to live only to bitch about stuff.

It did well because the story was just so darn engaging. I have The Last Wish on my Kindle. I'm going to read it very soon. Andrzej Sapkowski is a literary genius.

They can not get this wrong even if they tried.

Don't jinx it or we'll end up with Witcher: Invisible War.

I loved The Witcher as well and can't wait for 2. They can not get this wrong even if they tried.

Their mature and serious-dark-medieval approach to an RPG is a welcome change as well

These tumbler representations were much much more memorable and fun than say, lockpicking is in Dragon Age where you level up a skill and either unlock something or not with one click.

I much prefer having my character's stats determine whether or not I can do something in an RPG. If I'm playing a stealth game or something where skill is the focus, I don't mind minigames. But in an RPG, they are completely redundant and particularly tedious, since you have to do them again and again.

who thought it was a good idea to put QTEs (or minigames) into an RPG? Baffles the mind, it does.

I have had good experiences with one minigame in an old school RPG.

Wizardry VII had a pretty neat little system for unlocking doors and chests where there were a set of colors you had to click as they shifted to green. These tumbler representations were much much more memorable and fun than say, lockpicking is in Dragon Age where you level up a skill and either unlock something or not with one click.
