I love the "Halle Berry" comment. Christ some people are thick. Like it never goes that way, either. OMG, Nick Fury is BLACK in 8 new movies! Holy Crap! RACISM!
Sure, it happens less often that way, but the US population is only 12% black, so of course it'll happen less often.

Yeah, kxmode is probably right. Jake was chosen to maximize profits. And at least he doesn't have blonde hair. And, yeah, he's got acting chops, although they will most likely be wasted in this movie.
For me personally, it seeing his face transposed on the middle eastern set on which the movie takes place destroys the suspension of disbelief. Just watching the trailer makes me not want to watch it. That, and the over-use of slo-mo.
So I honestly think this was a wasted opportunity. They had the chance to make a truly immersive experience, but instead you get "White folks pretending to be ethnic" again. |

I don't like to read into things, but in short, if they ever released a Persian version of Prince of Persia, I'd watch that too.
They don't though. This is a western thing. I mean let's look at Disney's Alladin?
Put simply, we make things in our own image and the masses expect it, hence, we won't go too rogue on the culture thing. We make it familiar, and in doing so, raise cain amongst those who see conspiracy where really, it's just reality.

I think its mostly business tinged with racism. For a multi-million dollar film like this, they have to sell it by making some assurances to the backers that they'll make a tidy profit. Using big name stars is one of the ways they do that. It probably helps pull in some customers as well. Play it safe with a well known white actor or take a chance and use a lesser known Persian/Iranian actor.
Frankly I'd rather they'd worry about the quality than image, but the world doesn't work the way I think it should  |

Would it be a sign of Hollywood being racist, the audience being racist, or people not caring so long as they lead is a good actor (who also happens to look like the video game character)?
I'd say it's likely that order from least to most likely. |

300 was an ensemble cast because the story was about a group of people struggling against insurmountable odds. Prince of Persia is about one person against insurmountable odds. They gave the role to an actor they believe will be able to play the part well, has a large screen pressense, and draw a lot of ticket sells. I don't doubt someone from Bollywood would be able to play the part well, and have a screen pressense, but there's the issue of drawing in ticket sells. Names pull in crowds. A film starring Jake Gyllenhaal is going to sell more tickets for an American audience the same as a film starring Naveen Andrews would sell more tickets for an Indian audience.

I would have LOVED to have seen Naveen Andrews playing the lead role in Prince of Persia. Of course he is Indian...
In that article they did point out Jake's Jewish ancestry, he is also far from aryan looking. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he is a phenomenal actor.
Still... watching Naveen eviscerate some fools with a scimitar would have been fun.... |
