On In-game Advertising

There's a Massive Incorporated profile on BitMob with a look at the growth of this company that provides in-game advertising. The article analyzes the firm's growth, and expresses some cynicism over claims that in-game ads help subsidize development and add realism.

Adds realism? What? My first encounter with in game ads was in Planetside, on a far-from-Earth planet in the distant future. I had to rush back to base to re-arm.

Plastered all over this non-Earth future base were ads for Deuce Bigalow 2.

It felt so real! It wasn't jarringly out of place at all. On a side note, that was when I stopped playing Planetside.

"Nobody wants to be nobody in America. Ed is the apotheosis of a prevailing American syndrome. It used to be that someone became famous because they were special. Now people are considered special just for being famous. Fame, itself, is its own virtue.

I'm guessing those are the MMO gamers that wonder why women don't like them.

When we talk about marathon gaming sessions, pooping in a sock is the first thing that comes to the minds of many gamers.

What. The. Fuck. ?

So there's no need to wait for a version of AdBlock Plus for games?
