Maybe http://chucksblog.emc.com/chucks_blog/2010/05/what-ipads-did-to-my-family.html can help shed some light on the iPad's appeal.
I probably wouldn't get much use out of it either since I'm usually around a traditional computer anyway, but I can see it shine in that usage scenario.

Still can't see why the iPad is succeeding at all (aside from the people who will buy anything that says Apple on it, that is). I just don't understand the demand for an enormous iPhone that can't make calls.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

a guy who no longer gets involved with the technology he co-authored rings in on the debate? nice.

i rolled my eyes at that too but he does make good points about apple's attempts to bend the internet to their proprietary designs. they apparently changed their developer terms of service to specifically prevent flash apps from being developed on the iphone.

though he probably has his own agenda, i'm sure, i find myself agreeing with his points. proprietary doesn't do anyone any good. anyone not wearing a suit and attending apple shareholder meetings, anyway.
