TheSixthAxis has some quotes from Epic president Mike Capps published in Edge Magazine E215, now on newsstands. Capps admits "the money's on console," in discussing their platform choices, saying "piracy's already had its impact" on PC sales. “If you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago, Epic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying 'Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company'," he tells them. "We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model." That love aside, Capps seems to be ceding the PC market to social games: "So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming," adding, "but it’s not going to look like Gears of War." Thanks Joao.

Piracy isn't killing the PC gaming scene, it's Microsoft.
They need to stop shafting the PC in favor of their XBox, and start marketing (and making!) the PC as a viable and desirable gaming platform. However, this won't be quite an easy task, and will require the cooperation of many different areas of the market (hardware designers, developers, etc.) to help make the entry to PC games easier and far less daunting to the technically illiterate (aka, most console gamers.)
Yes, piracy exists and it does have it's effects, but it can be circumvented to a point where people will actually pay for their games rather than steal them if it's more convenient to buy than grab. (see Steam for example)Those that do pirate at that point will pirate regardless how cheap or convenient it is-they just don't want to spend the money, and no amount of DRM will force them to. IT is however the PC's high entry price (for non-builders) and technically complexity that is holding it from reaching the same kind of market share that consoles enjoy. Really, it has always been this way basically. |
