It's not a weird thing because all the older gamers who have posted here claim that they have no respect for PC Gamer anymore and don't read it or think it's relevant. Since it's still in publication, who exactly would be reading it if not for younger, less experienced gamers. I don't think Bluesnews is representative of all PC gamers. I figured that there would be a large demographic of older gamers who read PC Gamer out of nostalgia, something younger gamers wouldn't have since they weren't around when magazines were flourishing and the internet wasn't mainstream. |

I think you Bluesnewsers are being more than a little ridiculous.
How would you expect a magazine whose demographic is probably teens to very early 20s to have different results?
I'm an old gamer myself and get tired of the FOTM mentality of the average 'gamer' today, but the fact remains that that mentality is reality.
If people haven't heard of your personal favorite games, what the hell would you expect them to vote for?
I didn't see Descent: Freespace 1+2, Wing Commander or Syndicate on that list, should I mobilize some sort of military action against PC Gamer? Get the hell over it! |

I think it's disingenuous to suggest this is the TOP 100 games. People's opinions of what is popular change from year to year, and from decade to decade; even monthly. They should call this list Readers' Top 100 Zeitgeist. Then at least everyone knows this is what is currently popular, and not of all time.

Battlefield 1942 is 70th, ouch. For me this game changed how I look at FPS games forever and no other game company has been able to capture the vehicle/infantry based sandbox game play as well as DICE has.
After watching The Pacific recently its got me thinking about how glorious 1942 remake could be. If EA/DICE want to make a zillion dollars do a full remake of 1942 with Frostbite 2.0 + 2142's squad + order system. Sadly its probably not going to happen methinks. |

You're all aware that this is the READERS' top 100, right? Not the mag's? The last top 100 in the mag simply had Deus Ex as #1, which is exactly right.
I'm not sure why the mag gets lambasted for the stupidity of internet voters. What's next, blaming MLB for the fact the fans vote injured players into the all-star game?
The mag's not great, but it's pretty good with news and features on upcoming games. Its reviews are worthless, because by the time they get around to reviewing something it's already been forgotten by the majority of the game's players.
It's worth the $1.45 an issue that I'm paying for it.

Since most of the readers of PC Gamer today fall in a different demographic, these results dont really surprise me. I dont even doubt that they are genuine.... Back in the 90's when I was working at a shop part time fixing computers, we used to give away a 3mo sub to every customer who bought a machine. I gotta agree it's was a good mag back then. But yeah, the generation today is the instant-gratification group. Things have changed, meh another 10yrs and it'll change again. |

Grumpy Sod wrote on May 14, 2010, 13:05: All that lists like this ever prove is that people have really shitty long term memory. Nearly everyone seems to go 'Hmm, what have I enjoyed recently' and vote for that. Or even worse 'What is fun right now' like the only reason they're not still playing Imogen on the BBC Micro is that it's rubbish and not that it's old yet awesome. Oh, or that they're too young to have a clue what I just said. Jepp. Nearly ALL "Best of" lists i encountered, suffer from the "short attention span problem" most gamers have. And the lack of background knowledge they have, concerning games. They just remember, that they played a fun game last month. But WHY they had fun with this game and how to compare that fun with the fun, they had with a game two years ago ...
These lists serve only two purposes. First, they direct more readers to the site, the magazine. Second, adolescent minds need those lists, to ensure that they like the "right" game, because everyone else likes it too. |
