Pirated Max Payne 2 on Steam?

An image on the Steam Users' Forums indicates the version of Max Payne 2 being distributed through Steam is actually a version cracked by a pirate group. The image shows an ASCII "Myth" logo, and the accompanying thread speculates this version was used to skip the game's CD check for the Steam edition. Thanks Morris.

They probably didn't have the source code any more.
LOL I bet thats it. They didn't want to bother "cracking" it themselves since they don't have the source, yet they wanted in on all the sales and money from steam. I think its rockstar that owns it now?

Does anyone honestly think Valve did this to circumvent paying dues to Remedy/Rockstar?

Somebody just got lazy is all. For all we know all old games offered on Steam (prior to Steam becoming a mainstream service games are explicitly designed to support) are simply cracked versions.

Wow. Sad irony is sad.

It's all about making a buck, right? That's all that matters.

GOG's releases of Arcanum and FlatOut both use cracks.

They're selling us pirated copies?
Technically...yes. And they're violating the DMCA.

Meanwhile Myth was a PC ripping group, and I can't find any record of them (or anyone else) doing a rip of MP2.
Myth and Deviance were actually the same group. Myth just did rips of Deviance ISO releases. So, they had the same cracking tools.

Damn...

Shit's gonna hit the fan now...Does this mean that the gaming industry will have to embrace piracy groups much like the IT security industry welcomed 'hackers' with open arms?

Ironic indeed...

So, does this make everyone who downloads this version a pirate? I can't wait for the outcries from random publishers about this.

Didn't this happen with another game through steam? I forget which game though.

Yes, it's happened before. And do you know what's the most ironic thing about it?. It was Ubi's R6 Vegas 2

In short, it's basically impossible for this to be a stolen Myth executable - Myth never touched the game.

If you download the crack for 1.01 (not that difficult to find) and open it in an HEX editor, you'll see in the first screen:

MYTH/DEViANCE

Plus the big MYTH in ASCII art that the poster at the steam forums described.

This doesn't make much sense. As far as regular cracks are concerned, both the retail release and the 1.01 patch were cracked by Deviance. Meanwhile Myth was a PC ripping group, and I can't find any record of them (or anyone else) doing a rip of MP2.

In short, it's basically impossible for this to be a stolen Myth executable - Myth never touched the game.

That's cool. I'm downloading my copy of Max Payne 2 on Steam right now so I can then disable automatic updates for it and preserve this little piece of irony.

The devs just got lazy is all, they figured screw it , its cracked already so lets use their crack so we wont spend time cracking our own game.

Well, at least we know the pirate group can't complain about people stealing their work. Though a little recognition would be nice. Respect.
