Does anyone honestly think Valve did this to circumvent paying dues to Remedy/Rockstar?
Somebody just got lazy is all. For all we know all old games offered on Steam (prior to Steam becoming a mainstream service games are explicitly designed to support) are simply cracked versions. |

Meanwhile Myth was a PC ripping group, and I can't find any record of them (or anyone else) doing a rip of MP2. Myth and Deviance were actually the same group. Myth just did rips of Deviance ISO releases. So, they had the same cracking tools.

If you download the crack for 1.01 (not that difficult to find) and open it in an HEX editor, you'll see in the first screen:
