Sega Layoffs, Reorganization

IndustryGamers reports Sega has reorganized its western operations, and has "made the reluctant decision to reduce headcount by 36 employees in the San Francisco offices and 37 in London." Word is the European offices will continue to focus on "traditional goods" game development, while Sega's North American offices will refocus on digital distribution. "We've been going through the planning process the past 6 months, taking a look at the future of the market and where we think our investments need to be. It's no surprise that the share of digital is growing as an overall part of the video game business, so we decided we have to invest more in that specific area," says Sega West President Mike Hayes.

Thankfully Alpha Protocol was able to get finished, before budget cuts already lost AvP RPG at least till Sega can get a hit and afford to let Obsidian finish it.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history.....and they are stupid. Dwight D. Eisenhower

Sega is still very big in Japan. Most of the best PS3 games I've played have been imports from them - Valkyria Chronicles and the Yakuza series.

Sega? wow, what a name from the past. No consoles, hardly any noteworthy titles...exactly which platform do these guys even develop for?

They're fairly active even today. AvP and the recent Total War games have been published by them, as is the upcoming Alpha Protocol. They probably have console games as well but I wouldn't know about that.

I'm almost shocked the Sega name even exists today. I can't say I'm really shocked with what's happening here, but if they are indeed laying ppl off right a game's done, sigh that implies that these people were not contractors, but employees, hard to tell...
