I saw a documentary recently that made mention of the fact that he was not the greatest of pilots compared to the best of the day. Well Richthofen was not one to engage in the acrobatic dogfights we picture when thinking of World War I aerial combat. Rather he practiced the art of the "boom and zoom" where you try to approach your victims from above, preferably with the sun to your back. This lacks a lot of the romance associated with being a fighter pilot, but this tactic stood the test of time well into the missile age. |

Even though he played for the wrong team, the Red Baron was one fucking impressive pilot.
I saw a documentary recently that made mention of the fact that he was not the greatest of pilots compared to the best of the day. He did however have an incredible eye and was an amazingly talented marksman from a very early age.
