More Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Capacity Coming

The Battlefield Blog announces plans to take down EA servers a couple of times for maintenance, saying this will affect all three Battlefield: Bad Company 2 platforms. They say they will "come up with even more hardware with more capacity to handle all the BFBC2 traffic. Once the maintenance is complete you will experience an improvement to your online experience." The update also outlines some stats from the battlefield:

Since launch a week ago, BFBC2 has already put EA servers through the following stress:
The 4 different soldier types have gathered a score of more than 34 Billion.
There's been more than 400M kills made.
1.3M roadkills
Squads and Teams have assisted each other to 6.2 Billion points.

But what you've heard is just the usual echo chamber of the internet.

Really? You know this how? Have you been spying on me? So the people I talk to in person who advise I wait a few weeks until EA irons out the frequent server issues (something that they themselves admit to, BTW) are all in my head?

So if the insignificant "2 hours a day" server downtime repeatedly occurs to people trying to play at that time each day, they should just suck it up? You are looking at this from far too introverted a perspective.

I did comment on them, but they chose to make assumptions, decide for me what I was talking about and deliberately misinterpret my points. Kind of like what you've been doing.

I was being trolled, which is basically people deliberately misunderstanding me and persecuting me for their own amusement. No need to pretend.

Right?

Here, I'll give you a hand.

Modern Warfare 2 is a superior game because <insert opinion>, Bad Company 2 does <insert gameplay mechanic> poorly and here is a list of what makes it an inferior game - <use your brain and make a list>.

Or you can continue pretending you're being persecuted and misunderstood.

There are always people who pretend they are more clever than you are, and always have something they think is clever to say about it.

Which itself is a rather unintelligent way of saying that you have no response but want the last word. Next time just post last word, it's more honest at least. I can respect someone who just says "LAST WERD!!!" and gives up. They're trying in their own little way and I think everyone deserves credit for effort.

Well, sir, people claim that the BF series is so much more realistic and superior to the CoD series and others of their ilk

BF is unquestionably superior in every way.

- larger player counts
- vehicles
- good mix of arcade/realism
- bigger maps with more emphasis on strategy
- BC2 has a squad based focus which tightens the MP modes and rewards thought instead of twitch

I could keep going but what I wrote is already enough to make BC2 the defacto winner in that contest. Call of Duty 4 might have had some points going back and forth there but MW2 is definitely an inferior title in every way.

I've played MW2 and i've played Bad Company 2..

I have had more fun playing BFBC2 than I have any shooter since Battlefield2, or perhaps even 1942. I had a lot of fun with Battlefield Vietnam (playing the Bird song, running over ****s)

Bad Company 2 is a fantastic game. EA or not, it is a true achievement in gaming for bringing everything together the way it does.

Besides, its the first DX11 shooter!

This is why I prefer MW2's matchmaking system over this dedicated server crap. BC2 so far had been a headache for me. I spend more time trying to find servers and join up with my friends rather than actually playing the game. Give me intelligent matchmaking over archaic dedicated servers any day.

Go back to your console - real gamers are talking in here.

Hey it's not all about YOU ya know...

Seriously though, from what I've heard, you are in the minority. Most people I've heard from have experienced many problems playing BC2 in its first week. I know first hand how frustrating that can be, and I vowed never to become a victim again. Hence my wait-then-buy mantra.
But what you've heard is just the usual echo chamber of the internet. Yeah, EA's servers have had problems, but those problems have been around for at most an average of 1-2 hours a day. Again, not really defensible, but certainly not even close to the "majority" of play time. During peak hours over the last week, it's been essentially a non-issue.

This Blue's News post in particular talks about downtime that will occur in the middle of the night - again, it sucks for some people, but it's not even close to peak hours and certainly won't affect the majority.

KilrathiAce wrote on Mar 12, 2010, 05:41:
elefunk, you are foolish to assume there wouldnt be a lot more high end servers hosted with public package out, oh yes there certainly would especially with such popular game as this. It would only benefit the community(PC). Unfortnately DICE doesn't care as much for PC community as they should. Further, it would allow for much larger bug collection. You have a bad misconception that when public dedicated server package is released only some annoying people with weak connection and servers are using them. Further, there are many smaller businesses and gaming groups that host their own servers for various games and other purposes on high pipe and would host BC2 servers but they cannot unless they are graced with DICE recognition.

While BC2 multiplayer scheme and servers on PC are light years ahead of MW2, there is a lot more that can be improved with modding/sdk tools and free server package released. *Oh yea of course then the game could become a lot better on PC than on console and maybe DICE does not want that to happen*
My remark about a public server package was nothing more than an off-handed remark due to my experiences over the decades extending back to Quake 3 Arena, every Unreal Tournament game, and more recently Team Fortress 2. In all of those games, my favorite times have come when playing on professionally-hosted servers that I rent with a group of friends, and the worst experiences ever came when playing on shitty servers hosted in a guy's basement.

Obviously, there would be more servers available and more customization allowed with a public server package, but right now, there isn't even close to a lack of servers. There is a huge breadth of servers to play on, on every map, of every size, in every geographical location, running all sorts of rules, standard gameplay, Hardcore gameplay, and on. There could be more, but that's not the problem here.

The connection problems are being caused by EA's back-end stat tracking service. It has absolutely nothing to do with the availability of a public server hosting package, or the number of servers available.

If anything, releasing a public server package at this point would only hurt things further because it would be even more servers for EA's back-end service to track.

And this certainly says nothing about "caring for the PC community", since these problems exist across the PS3 and 360. The PC version is a fantastic port, and is easily the most fun I've had with a shooter in years.

Again, matchmaking vs. dedicated servers is totally irrelevant to these problems. The same problems would have existed because of EA's back-end stat tracking service.

If anything, with matchmaking, this would have been even worse since EA's service would have a hell of a lot more to do to make those matches.

Only reason why Modern Warfare 2 doesn't have these problems is because Infinity Ward has experience handling millions of concurrent players. DICE said Bad Company 2 is roughly 400% larger than anything they've done before, and they weren't ready to scale.

Once again, this isn't a defense of DICE or EA, but an appeal to people on Blue's stop blaming these problems on totally irrelevant reasons

Over 40 hours played, and minimal downtime - the 4 ommunities that I play with all have same experience.

There are things to work out here and there - but those 40 hours of gameplay are some of the best I have had in a LOOOOOOOONG time. There are lots of fixes, things you can do, etc etc etc to get your game to work or work better.

This is a must have if you enjoyed BF in the past at all.

Best way to describe it is CoD with vehicles and better gameplay.

They do?
I prefer the more open maps, the lack of money flying out of people when I shoot them, lack of kill streaks, and other features. I certainly don't think one is more realistic than the other. Neither comes anywhere near RvS, or even AA3.
I merely pointed out that allowing people to bunny-hop all over with heavy weapons as big as they are is pretty darn silly. It was so silly in BF2 that it was finally nerfed. Even Counter-Strike Source pretty much took care of bunny-hopping.
sure, it is silly, it isn't realistic. it also won't get you much, most of the "hold the button down and spray" tactics seem to net me "why didn't my bullets hit?" Yet when I burst fire I tend to get much better results. But regardless, this is "flavor of the game" and subject to personal opinion and enjoyment.

However, complete lack of any semblance of realism is something people slam other games for when they compare them to the BF series. I then get trolled for pointing that out the issue and the hypocrisy.

Again, I don't see people saying "battlefield is much more realistic than CSS or MW2". But if people saying "battlefield was never realistic, you're expecting the wrong thing out of it" is trolling in your book, then you need to leave the internets behind.

Amazing.

You'll probably troll me for posting this too.
I guess if you consider a rational response with valid points 'trolling' then you're going to have a frustrating time on the Internet.

When you have three posts, and two of them are calling people trolls, you're not off to a good start.

Yeah i'm not exactly sure I understand the "Battlefield is SO UNREALISTIC" argument.

This is a game (since its inception in BF1942) been about arcade vehicular/infantry mixed combat. Jump in a plane, fly upside down, jump out , pull a parachute, drop directly into a tank..

Anyone arguing realism with Battlefild obviously has no clue what they're talking about.

I think if you are looking for realism you want Armed Assault, America's Army or Flashpoint. Battlefield has never been about pure realism.
