| This is probably the most rational take on Derek Smart possible and even then it's too forgiving at times. |

he made some very interesting and informative posts along the way That's certainly debatable. If by "interesting" you mean a monkey flinging his own feces, then yes, I guess I'd agree with that.:)
he generally clearly tried to avoid the *Derek Smart* *Derek Smart* *Derek Smart* bullshit that followed every mention of his name. I would disagree there.

In the case of Derek? No, it was truly a waste of time even sorting through his drivel. That's not even remotely fair... he made some very interesting and informative posts along the way, and while it is true his volatile side showed through on more than one occasion, he generally clearly tried to avoid the *Derek Smart* *Derek Smart* *Derek Smart* bullshit that followed every mention of his name. |

Again, I've seen him light up his own fans for simply asking for better quality preview videos so when you say "be fair", understand that I am being fair. The behavior hasn't been isolated to the community either, you'll notice he's had difficulty working with every publisher he's come into contact with. Derek hasn't met a bridge he couldn't burn down.
Regardless, he's not some poor developer who the community has it in for and never did anything to anyone boo hoo etc. He's very much a Jekyll and Hyde type. |

Obviously being able to dialog directly with a developer is not nearly as desirable as one would imagine. In the case of Derek? No, it was truly a waste of time even sorting through his drivel.

He used to post to another board I frequented 5-10 years ago and was decent to talk to unless someone lit his fuse on purpose. If you're going to point out that he's been volatile for years, you have to be fair and recognize that it's due in large part to people following him from board to board trying to troll him since they know he won't back down from it. |

You need to go through his post history then, he has plenty of times where someone will just ask a simple question and he will go off on them. If he doesn't like your question, you are a "fucking retard" or "too fucking dumb to play my games" kind of thing.

i'd hate to make the comparison but i'll do it anyway
It's just like George W Bush. It doesn't matter what that man does now, people are going to bring up negativity and hate no matter where the man speaks.
His reputation precedes him, but I also agree with Blue.. we're no better for playing the same game he is, and unfortunately I dont think there's a way out of it. |

Most developers don't call their consumers schoolyard names to be fair to people here. Derek brought it all on himself time and time again. I don't play his games and I'm not a fan but I have to side with Blue, people are the ones who start shit with the guy 99.9% of the time. Granted, his rep is of his own making but my own philosophy is that unless I'm personally attacked by another poster I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. Lots of folks here just start with Derek because its like poking a Ferret in a cage with a stick, they know they'll get a reaction. Sure, it's fun but ultimately I'd rather see his take on some industry subjects because, believe it or not, he's had some good posts on the workings of the industry in the past. |

See aforementioned "hate."
Some posters here seemed to take it as a personal mission to drive him away. Obviously being able to dialog directly with a developer is not nearly as desirable as one would imagine. Even something as simple as pointing out that screenshots on his website are being blocked by the popular AdBlock plugin, devolves into him telling people that they are too stupid to view his website. Not to mention that any criticism of his design decisions or game mechanics would lead to over-emotional outbursts with no real value. |

Let me clarify what I mean. I'm not opposed to hate when it is warranted. For example: Ubi's DRM preventing customers who bought their product from playing. But bashing someone for forming a company as a failure before their spawning enterprise has a chance to prove its worth has to be the lowest form of hate. Yeah you've never posted any hate on this site Perhaps you missed this:
