Just Cause 2 Demo

Steam now offers the promised playable demo for Just Cause 2, the action sequel from Avalanche Studios. (thanks Derek). Here's word on the demo, which requires DirectX 10:

The Just Cause 2 demo features a massive 35 square miles of the Lautan Lama Desert, a vast expanse of stunning, sun-scorched scenery taking up just one of the many islands in the 400 square miles of the Panau archipelago. Packed with towns, villages, military installations, mountain ranges, missions and more, the demo will feature an astonishing amount of activities for the player... and opportunities for adrenaline-fuelled chaos are limitless.

Hunt down and assassinate one of the gameís 50 military colonels; devastate military bases, bio fuel chambers, government infrastructure and more; hijack tuk tuks, military 4x4s, armoured vehicles, mopeds, helicopter gunships, light aircraft, mini vans and numerous other military and civilian vehicles; freefall from desert outcrops or from burning planes at 20,000 feet; and unlock one full, multi-stage mission, traversing the mountains to a heavily fortified government radar station and ending in an unforgettable desert car chase.

"The Just Cause 2 demo is simply massive and with so much to do, the replay value is enormous," said Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix London Studios. "Itís easily one of the biggest freeroaming demos of all time and for fans of openworld games, itís unmissable."

Yeah AF is at max.

I was talking mainly about tweaks in some kind of settings INI but if you got the blur/bloom disabled by just changing some graphics option in game I'll have to take a second look

Yeah, I managed to get that turned off, but I'm not sure which of the 9,877 options it was that did that... Motion blur perhaps? Have you tried increasing your anisotropic filtering? This game heavily relies on AF, and with most modern cards, you can turn that up without much noticeable loss in framerates.

Creston have you explored the possibility of changing specific graphics options?

That bloor/blur on everything that's not 10 feet from you seems to take away the awe that the view distance inspires.

I'd love to disable it somehow

BTW, this link gives you 24 hours for the demo, rather than 30 mins.

http://mod.gib.me/justcause2/nodemolimits.zip

(unzip it, drop it in the Just Cause 2 Demo folder.)

Thanks to somethingawful for the linky.

Just tried it, it seems to work so far. Will play for 30 mins to see if it ACTUALLY keeps going, or if they just changed the shown timer.

Edit : Yup, works like a charm. 24 hours of awesome goodness.

Note that Gogamer is pre-ordering it for 40 bucks for the PC. I may get it for the PS3 instead. I know, heresy. This just looks like the kind of game that's fun to play in the living room, causing mayhem with people watching. Like GTA4 on steroids.

Some genius government troops chased me in a helicopter today, and apparently did not see the large tower that I parachuted through. Hehe.

That 30 min timer is really annoying though. 2 more weeks till it comes out

The game seems pretty fun... I think I'm going to get it from Amazon for $50 with a $15 coupon for a future video games (I'll probably use it for Episodes From Liberty City). The end of March is going to be busy for me - JC2, the GTA4 expansion, and DA:O expansion.

Thanks space captain. It turns out that Steam wasn't completely done installing it yet, or something. I rebooted, ran it again as administrator, and it showed an installation progress bar.

Runs fine now. Bit slow on my old 8800GT, but damn, this game is fun. My finest moment so far, grappling a sniper in a tower onto a moving car. He sure went flying purdy.

Also, taking cover on a water tower, having the government blow the water tower up, causing me to fall, face first, onto a concrete wall, and leaving a giant blood splatter. The guy gets up and says something like "ow, that hurt!"

Hehe. Awesome game. AWESOME game.

Sigh. It won't even launch for me. Steam says "preparing to launch," the screen goes black, and bam, back at the desktop.

Well, at least it's only a demo.

Wow this IS fun demo! 2010 is kicking ass! This is what games should strive to be - FUN and over the top is fine when done right. The voice acting is supposed to be corny and it works perfectly for the game and atmosphere. **SOLD** The trailer vids on GT looked good and sure enough the gameplay is exactly how/what they were saying it looked like.

Metacritic says this is single player only which is a real shame. This looks like a great game to hack multiplayer into!! I'd definitely pay $10 for an MP DLC or something.

Yeah, even dumb shit like that annoying Cisco VPN client will work in XP mode, it's pretty good for stupidly old corporate applications and such.

Anyways played the demo last night, it was a lot of fun. The voice acting was my only complaint, I think I'll pick this up on Steam when it comes out.

What programs don't work in Win7? So far I've not run into a single problem. I even decided I wanted to play Age of Mythology again the other day, installed and runs without a problem, and it's going on ten years old.

I use a program called act, an older version 5.0, which I can't get to work on win 7. I've got 2 different versions of it as well, both version 5 technically but one is called act, another is called act 2000. Sadly I cannot get either to work on win 7 (64 bit)

I bought a new HDD and used that to install win 7 on rather than formatting my xp drive and the machine automatically asks which OS I want to boot into which is awesome. I was expecting to have to disable one HDD in the bios each time I wanted to boot into windows but win 7 was smart enough to make that process simple.

I was able to get act 2000 to work on 32 bit windows vista which makes me think that the problem is the 64 bit os not being able to run a 32 bit program. This is the only program I've tried using the compatability mode with and it's frustrating that it can't simply make it work.

I'm buying a copy of act 6 off ebay in hopes that maybe that one will work in win 7. If not act 7, and so on. I tried their latest version but at some point they went from a handy little contact manager to a bloated database system that is way too much for what I need....hopefully 6.0 will work.

Did you try XP Mode? That's how we get older applications like Service Desk and InfoKeep to work in it.

This game is absolute and pure fun. It's amazing with a giggle.

At some point I held on to a gas cannister and shot it. I lifted up into the air together with the cannister and just before it blew up I pulled out my parachute.

Amazing. Just amazing.

Don't run out of ammo before shooting them down or deciding you'd rather have one of their helicopters.

Really enjoying this one. It's actually better than I was expecting. I had a feeling that I would be disappointed like I was with Mercenaries 2.
I'm also quite surprised at just how well it runs on my system. I have a P4 3.2, with only 2gigs of ram and an 8800GTS. 1440x900, with not really any of the 'fancy' stuff on, and while it's not super smooth, it runs considerably well.

I just have little respect for people who mope and cry and demand that everyone keep supporting DX9 ad infinitum instead of taking it upon themselves to spend an hour fixing the issue. It's not difficult.
