It's very stupid of them to do this online-only bullshit. To be perfectly honest, I don't think it's even legal.
I'm serious. I don't think you can sell people a product with these kinds of stipulations in this country.
Now this might sound controversial, but what they should have done was be completely outright and defensive of their position. They should have done the Bioshock thing.
Yep. THAT thing.
Why? Because the idea behind that effort is to implement those uncracked (initially at least) and draconian hardcore measures ONLY DURING THE CRITICAL FIRST FEW MONTHS AFTER RELEASE.
What that does is get all the lazy people with money that would have pirated to actually go out and buy the game.
You should be able to put up with those limitations for a temporary period. They aren't over-encumbering as long as there aren't any problems (and there were, if I remember correctly). |

I'm not sure if this has been covered already - but doesn't this put players in the same situation that EA caused with the "we're shutting down the servers for games less then two years old" ?
In other words, forcing you onto the SH5->SH6->SH7 bandwagon whether you want to go or not?
It'll be hard/impossible to play these games with the DRM in place without those servers.
And I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for an update from the company removing said DRM after the servers went down. EA certainly didn't make any effort there either.
Alarmist? Probably, but what the hell...

Nothing really new but a different voice to add. I had no plans to buy any of those games anyway, so no sale, but no lost sale.
I'm a fortunate person. I come from a middle class family in the US and have never been unemployed when I wanted to be employed. Perhaps if I had less fortunate economic circumstances I might have tried pirating games, but as things are, I never have.
I, like others, have been buying and playing PC games since the early DOS days. I have viewed most copyright protection schemes over the years as mostly annoying but even worse, pointless. I suspect, in the end, this scheme will also prove to be pointless.
However, this scheme would seem to have a much higher chance to prevent legitimate customers from using/playing the product they have purchased. The fact that Ubisoft has acknowledged that in some instances legitimate customers will be unable to play their single player games (due to a server outage or whatever) and that they feel this is acceptable shows a blatant disregard for basic customer service. I'm hoping such a company will fall flat on it's face. |

After reading all of the comments/points/facts in this thread about this new DRM method, I can safely say that I change my attitude towards it.
It's complete and utter bullshit. |

He obviously wouldn't say who he knows so this isn't confirmed or anything but if that's true, expect this issue to become a way bigger stink than it even is now. It could be possible that Blizzard goes this route, though right now it's probable the whole industry is watching how well Ubisoft's titles and the new EA titles with a similar DRM will do on the market. |

That will be disturbing if that comes to pass, especially as EA appears to be going a similar route. This really could signal the death of (single-player) PC gaming as we know it. |

Dmitri_M:
Make sure you and your friends are aware that any ubisoft games can transfer more than 15 gigs a month on this thing. (the math from them having a constant net connection that does more than most dialup at 50k baud per what Ubisoft said). Don't want you guys to be surprised by a big unexpected bill.
Parallax Abstraction / Prez: I think they are thinking about what blizzard has been saying all along, that you need to log into battle.net to play D3/SC2 titles (even in single player), and that blizzard has been removing LAN play because of this. So yeah, its similar in some ways. The thing is, I don't think they will require a constant authentication and kill game progress if it fails. I think it will be more like steam (although valve games still offer LAN play) so you login once and then play. Plus, blizzard has shown that they have a dedication to keeping servers running (unlike EA that often shuts down game servers after a year or two, blizzard hasn't shut down any needed to play games) and they are well aware of what MMORPG like infrastructure will require (since they run WoW and have run battle.net for years too) to keep battle.net going.
Ubisoft is jumping into it blind and has no clue and hasn't run any alpha/beta/stress tests on the MMO like infrastructure they need to run thier crap. So when thier servers go down frequently (and you can bet they will), they will stop everyone from being able to play.

In South Africa we have very restrictive caps on our internet. It's not uncommon for us to go offline for the last few days of the month.
Many of my friends don't even have internet at home due to the cost.
Ubisoft games are stocked in our stores. People will buy them unawares of this DRM. |

From a strictly business standpoint, Blizzard is one of the very few companies who I could see getting away with a scheme like this. From a personal standpoint, I am praying that your friend/cohort/informant is wrong. Having to boycott SC2 after waiting 12 goddamn years for it may just break me into little pieces. |

| It's like they are coming right out and saying "Fuck all you PC users. Fuck you all and die. And buy on the 360." I say good riddance. It's bad enough when a publisher treats their customers like criminals but Ubi's going to treat us all like morons on top of it. |

Several of those games are titles I'm interested in, and undoubtedly Ubisoft will have numerous other future titles I would have liked to have played. Damn it all.
Maybe one day I'll be able to get these games through GOG.com (I really hope so), but until then I guess it's farewell to Ubisoft. |

Games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Mass E....- ok scrap what I was beginning to type, I'm gonna make it easier on myself:
Games like the ones BioWare makes are the solid proof that quality conquers piracy. PC games will always be pirated no matter what protection they add to it. The people that make the protection would know how to work around it and thus the hackers will at some point know this too.
If a game is great like the stuff Bioware and, yes, Blizzard brings out.. then it sells big. Period. Add shit like this DRM scheme, and faithful buyers will turn to piracy out of pure principle.
Your loss. Ubisoft. It's been fun. |
