ATI AvP Hotfix

ATI support now offers a new version 10.2 hotfix for their Catalyst reference drivers to address an issue causing the game to hang after applying DirectX 11 from within the game when playing under the Radeon HD 4700 and 4800 series accelerators. Thanks Big Download.

I have both the GTX 295, and a 5970. There is no visual difference between the 2. None. So much for the tesselation effects eh?

The options are to run AvP in DX 9 or DX 11; there is no DX 10 option, so if you want DX 10 you just run the DX 11 executable and stuff you can't handle get turned off automatically.

The game seems mostly like a DX9 title with DX11 added for the hype wagon. Since DX10 introduced the fallback mechanism and DX11 has it too, we get some sort of DX10 support automatically it seems. But they ignored the fact that DX10.x can do some of those "DX11 effects". Like MSAA, for ex.

The newer STALKER games had devs that cared more it seems. Call of Pripyat can run almost everything on a DX10.1 card. You just lose some shadows and tessellation, but you still get a lot of extras over DX9 including MSAA and alpha test AA.

A lot of game developers don't bother to test their games on ATI cards as rigorously as Nvidia cards, so often times ATI needs to hotfix/patch compatibility issues. Sometimes they just screw up as well. Nvidia does the same thing, albeit on a slower pace and with beta drivers. It's just a reality of the business. If you want absolutely stable drivers that rarely have issues then you look at business graphics cards where the drivers can literally spend six months in QA being hammered on.

Why does ATI need a hotfix for every new game being released?

You can enable Direct X 11 on Direct X 10 cards, it just won't give you all the features found in Direct X 11 for obvious reasons.

Although to what extent the performance and quality is over Direct X 9 in the bastardized Direct X 10 is likely spotty.

Why would you enable DX11 with a 4700/4800 series card? They don't do DX11. They're DX 10.1 cards.
