Star Trek Online Borg Raid Details, Trailer

Cryptic Studios has issued a Raid Episodes Fact Sheet for Star Trek Online, detailing some planned new Special Task Force missions in the Trekkie MMORPG, almost all of which involve the powerful and mysterious Borg. The first episode is called STF: Infected, which they say is due for release this month (maybe as early as today: see below). Here's how that is described: "Starfleet has lost contact with one of its star bases. More than 400 officers could be lost, including a key member of Starfleet's Borg Task Force. Infiltrate the base and take the fight to the Borg!" Also, Cryptic is soliciting questions about the Klingon content in the game in this forum thread and are offering 240 Cryptic Points to those who fill out this Subscriber Survey, while Massively points the way to West Karana, where they are formulating feedback for Cryptic that doesn't precisely fit with the survey's format. Back to the new task force missions: Accompanying the news is a batch of new screenshots, and a new trailer showing off Borg content and combat, which concludes saying the Infected content will launch today. The HD clip is embedded below.

Everyone comparing everything to WoW is a big problem. The stark differences in setting notwithstanding, of course STO isn't going to have as much content as an MMO that has been out for 5 years. Knowing Paramount/CBS, STO probably was pushed out too early so it's perhaps early yet to condemn the devs. If anything, one should condemn Atari or CBS.

And for what it matters, I've found enough to do in City of Heroes to keep me paying for 2 and a half years in total. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's plenty of fun to me. The same is true for STO. I am still entertained enough to continue playing daily.

Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

I think the issue most people had with this game, and the issue I had was..
compared to other MMO's out there in terms of things you can compare it to, this game is shallow and boring.. and lacks content. When you see everything you can do in WoW, and see everything you can potentially do.. how big and vast the game is on every level, then games like this fail.

It's almost unfair to new MMO's coming out. If they don't deliver as much content, and do it as cleanly as WoW (the golden child measuring stick for most people) then it's a huge strike against it and it's already starting off on the wrong foot.

Also., this dev house and related devs (Net Devil/Cryptic/NC Soft) are known for putting out shallow games with not much of a long term lasting appeal. So there's that.

Did...did you expect WoW?

I guess the difference between Klingons and Orcs could be confusing to some. Vulcans have pointy elfin ears, and Ferengi are vaguely...ever so vaguely...goblinoid.

But then there's the focus on combat between interstellar starships.

And the entirely different genre.

Oi.

Having recently become involved in two different MMOs with settings that are about as unWoW as you can possibly get, I still wonder what the "But...it's not WoW!?!?" crowd expected to see when they logged in a post-Apocalyptic or high SF game setting?

Again, not even remotely suggesting that the games have WoW's obviously industry re-defining polish - but about 1 in 5 of the complaints I've heard have been the "not WoW" shtick.

(Heck, after six years of WoW and shameless clones, I consider that a bloody bullet point.)

Try Allods Online. I don't know much about the end game since my character is a level 15 Savant Summoner (a summoner is like a cross between a Priest and a Warlock). The game is REALLY fun! Take WOW and place it in a parallel universe. Best part is its free to download and play.

After a thoroughly unimpressive open beta I'm hoping that they'll be able to turn it around by Summer, by which time I should be able to pick the game up for less than a one legged Ferengi whore. I wouldn't bet my last Tribble on it, though.
