Supreme Commander 2 Demo

Steam News announces the playable demo for Supreme Commander 2 is now available on Valve's digital distribution network, offering a sample of the real-time strategy sequel from Gas Powered Games. The demo includes two levels of the tutorial along with two missions for the United Earth Federation (UEF), one of the three Colonial Defense Coalition factions. Valve also announces that the demo and the upcoming full retail and electronic versions of the game will both include full Steamworks support for auto-updates, Steam achievements, Steam support for in-game DLC, and more. Supreme Commander 2 is due in North America on March 2, and in PAL territories on March 5. Steam has also begun accepting preorders for the game.

I think I'm going to stay away from this one until the verdict on an SDK/mod tool set is out. Until mods can be made to make the experimentals feel more like metallic behemoths of destruction and less like they are made of cray paper, or ones that put some of the wonderful complexity from the first back in, I think I'll stay away.

So I'm guessing I'm the only one around here who has already bought SC2 and is just waiting for it's release, because there's an awful lot of hate in here.

I must admit though, having played the demo, wow the experimentals drop fast now. Bloody fast, really.

That said, the game was running smooth as a baby's bottom. Ok, so it's just the demo, but if I don't run into any "games with AI's in them slow to a crawl" bugs, I'll be a happy chappy.

One note though, I've added a serious 12" subwoofer to my computer's sound setup now, and this game is great for bass. When it comes out and the missus ain't home, I'll be cranking it.

;p I am not even a casual rts player (and i equally hated Army Men ,p).. I have at best a passing interest in the genre and supcom's SP is just boring and more grinding than rts.

To be honest the only rts i liked is World in Conflict.. So yeah, didn't like supcom 1, won't like supcom 2 much either. Give me story driven rts or Homeworld 3 ;p Not the grind fest that is Supcom

I haven't played the demo yet, so maybe I shouldn't even be commenting. But, it sounds like they stripped out all of the features that made SC unique among the myriad of RTS games on the market.
Now, a run of the mill style RTS can still be good, I enjoyed C&C 3 for example despite the lack of innovation, but it won't be something I'll be running out and buying come launch day.

Are you sure you're playing the same thing I am? Looks like ass was not the first thing that came to mind when I fired it up... Confused

=-Rigs-=
I wouldn't say it looks like ass, the graphics are nice from a technical standpoint, but it doesn't compare to StarCraft 2 while in motion, IMO.

The game is rather bland, impersonal, and boring. I'll spend some more time to see if it grows on me, but I'm not impressed so far (and I did play the first SC).
It doesn't look terrible, but SupCom1 was definitely far better. Starcraft 2? It doesn't look as good as Tiberium Wars which is 4 years older. It almost looks like a clone of TW.

No more retarded stuff, no more multi-engineer per-building bullshit, no more refueling and no more connectivity which is actually a huge improvement (who'd have thought) - Research seems interesting too. Overall this demo convinced me that the new influence on supcom's makers is good.
Sounds like all the stuff that made SupCom1 so much better.

I say, for the people who like it better, instead of paying $50, just buy "Army Men RTS". It has the game play you want and is only like $10 now. SupCom1 is for real RTS players.

WTF is FA?
Forged Alliance was the first mistake they made that ruined the original. SupCom2 is their final mistake.

It's actually the same engine used in SupCom1 which was modified for Demigod. It probably runs better because the graphics are far worse now. Even with the graphics cranked, it still looks bad. C&C3 looks better and is 3-1/2 years old. SupCom1 graphics were far better. This game is disappointing. The shields and missile launchers are add-ons to factories, not standalone constructions. The whole game has been watered down to be compatible to the X-Box.

Just played it. It's not bad, but it's not SupCom either. It looks very plastic'y and underwhelming, and much of the awesome UI commands from the first game are completely gone.

Experimentals have become creampuff units that can be taken down by ten or so normal units, and they've also become absolute Rock/Paper/Scissor units, as they simply lack defenses against one of the three of Land, Sea or Air. In SupCom 1 an experimental had strengths and weaknesses, but if you thought you were taking one out with a group of bombers, you were gravely mistaken.

Just played the mission with the infinite fatboys attacking you. I just parked 10 gunships at each of their predetermined paths. They never got through.

10 gunships kill a fatboy?

The story is not too bad, though quite cliche. The voice acting is okay, Maddox is pretty good. The maps are terribly tiny, in no way, shape or form related to the huge maps of SupCom 1. The UEF has an experimental troop carrier, but why bother? It takes you tanks 40 seconds to drive from one side of the level to the other...

I'm glad they released a demo, because it saves me spending 50 bucks. How the fuck do they make SupCom, then this, and call THIS better??

BobBob, are you trying to say that Total Annihilation and SupCom are derivative C&C clones? heh

C&C3 and SupCom are almost different genres. Both are fun games but they have dramatically different ideas on what an RTS is. The difference in the scale of the battles and environments is just incredible, for one.

Wow, maybe your piece of shit video card needs an upgrade? The game looks great on my 28in at full rez, and plays great. plays ten times better like I told you all a few weeks ago.

There are just some haters that just cant get over hating on a good game.

You must be confused, because my video card is fine; I had the graphical settings set to "High" in the demo. The only games I'm a hater of are shitty games. The problem may have been that I only invested 10 minutes of my time into the demo, so take my impressions based on that, but if a game can't hold my attention for more than 10 minutes, it's a failure in my book.

It seems like they try to appeal to a totally different crowd than the first SupCom players. I agree with the comments about dumbed down gameplay and stuff. My feelings are sorta mixed about this game, somethings I like better some I don't.

With that said I will probably buy the game.

A lot of the 'new features and units' seem like indirect rip-offs of Red Alert 3 and Red Alert 3 Uprising. Not very original.

I can only hope that they will put out a map editor and strong modding tools to allow the community to make those bigger maps that are needed to bring the game play of FA back.

**THIS**

So a good question to ask is "is the engine more capable than FA/SC1 or is it a technical step backwards and unworthy of the community's attention?"

I don't know about the demo. In my opinion compared to vanilla Supcom and FA, Supcom 2 feels kind of dumbed down.

Maybe because its just a demo I did not feel challenged in the slightest.

It feels as though I could not lose even if I wanted too
