Maybe their goal is to keep DRM online requirement until the game actually is fixed up post release? |

Punisher wrote on Feb 22, 2010, 18:12: No, all that will happen is that Ubi will say "See there is no demand for sub sims, we are going to stop them"..... Sadly this is probably true. I mentioned somewhere else that no matter what we do, we lose in the short term. If we buy it, we tell Ubi that we're ok with this DRM scheme. If people pirate it, they say they're glad they went to such an extreme and only wish they had thought of something even more restrictive. If nobody buys it and nobody pirates it, Ubi just says there isn't a market for sub sims anymore and that's the end of Silent Hunter. None of those outcomes tells Ubi that we all hate their DRM scheme to death, because nobody at Ubi is going to listen anyway. The old suits can't grasp the new market no matter what we say; you might as well try teaching a cat to run the business.

You may want to take a wonder over to the ubi forums and the subhunter/subsim forums to see the number of people who are refusing to buy based on this. Subsims may be a niche game, but they're also very dedicated players with a very strong modding community.
edit:
I have a feeling this will be the same deal... Don't count on it, UBI is coming off as "we know best, because we know best." Not the mentality you want to present to consumers, hasn't work for any company in the past and bankrupted plenty of others. |

I have to admit I'm pissed, but I'm not worried. I agree Ubi shouldn't be pulling this shit, but I don't think they'll get away with it unscathed. EA learned (for a month or two) from their mistakes, I'm almost positive the same will happen to Ubi. The general press has gotten wind of it and they'll pursue it if only because it's a light news day. They will change their minds in one way or another. If not pull the DRM wholesale, they'll release a patch after SH5 is released to neuter the DRM. Hell, X3's dev EGOSOFT do the same. X3 had DRM but it was turned off in a patch after the game had sold long enough. I have a feeling this will be the same deal...
And if not, it will certainly be cracked soon after release anyway. I'm sorry, but the game looks awesome. I'm not gonna 'bite my nose to spite my face'...

As a huge fan of the series I've been looking forward to this game for months. Unfortunately, between punishing paying customers and being at the mercy of Ubi server status for life, I'm passing.

| I'm out too. I want the game, but I'm not going to support this crap. All we can really do is vote with our wallets. Of course they'll just attribute it to piracy anyway (since I assume there will be a crack eventually), so maybe it just doesn't matter. Fuck Ubi. Fuck them in their stupid asses. |

Pity, I really like the SH series. I agree. I am extremely pissed about this customer hostile DRM and there is no way in hell where I will support them. |

Damn it. I really wanted this game until UBI announced it's new soul-eating DRM scheme.
And no, I don't plan on pirating the game in protest. I'll just spend my money on something else. Ditto.
At the risk of being accused of tooting my own horn, I'll quote myself from another thread, as it is rather pertinent.
When someone like me - a guy who has seen Das Boot about 50 times (in German, natch) and continues to be entranced by Jurgen Prochnow's absolutely brilliant performance as Capt.-Lt. Henrich Lehmann-Willenbrock every time, and still cringes when the boat is finally sunk at the end... when a hardcore sub sim junkie like me says they aren't even going to consider buying Silent Hunter 5 because of the DRM, that is a huge deal. Other hardcore simmers will undoubtedly be joining me in that I'm certain. |

Too many big publishers I refuse to buy games from. Ubisoft with this online bullshit, 2K's GFWL 15-install limits (that they don't tell you about and not resettable; sneaky), EA with its Ubisoft-like DRM for future PC titles, and Activision... well I hate their guts.
THQ, we will see, but Dawn of War 2 has 10 (or 15) install limits and not resettable. I have no idea what their future plans are. |
