Star Trek Online Needs a "Meaningful" Death Penalty

Cryptic says their MMORPG Star Trek Online needs a "meaningful" death penalty, so there's some consequence to those "he's dead Jim" moments in the Trekkie MMORPG. "I get that people want to feel a sense of risk when they’re fighting in battles, but if the only emotion you feel when you’re playing a game is fear that you’re going to lose some time due to an arbitrary gameplay mechanic, we’re probably not doing something right," executive producer Craig Zinkievich explains to IncGamers. "We are looking into finding a meaningful way to give players a deeper sense of loss when something bad happens. But we want it to feel right, rather than just like an arbitrary penalty." How about this: Dead players must be shot onto the surface of the planet created by the Genesis device.

There were levels,sure, but the max stats you could have were 99 STR, 99 DEX, 99 INT and those stats only increased if used and no one, NO ONE had 99 in all 3 categories at one time.

What I am getting at is that even a level 40 or higher person could get his asshole kicked in by 3 level 20+ enemies.

Not like this crap WOW where "I am level 70, and cannot play with anyone lower and I cannot die!"

If you truly were on the UO dev team, well sorry but your time in the sun has long set. You'll be remembered but games MOVE ON. Why ain't Richard Garriot coming back to do more Ultima? I bet you there are reasons for that eh?

Hate WoW all you like, but there are reasons why that game is at the top of the MMO heap. Hate all you like but open your eyes. As for STO, death penalties all amount to the same thing - lost time. Look at MMO's where dying actually delevels you. How well did that concept work out?
