AvP Demo Released Early

Steam now offers the Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer demo, a day earlier than announced, perhaps because of some Steam downtime scheduled for tomorrow. On a related note, here's a new "Infestation Mode" Trailer from the game that shows off the multiplayer mode that results when you leave food laying around. Here's the embedded clip.

I kept attacking Aliens then suddenly they'd be behind me and Im screwed, wonder how they do that.
They do have too much HP too I was shooting one while he did his kill move on someone, he had no problem finishing them off then killing me whilst Im shootin then both. Maybe invulnerable doing finishing moves?

Managed to enter another game after 20 minutes of waiting. 5 minutes into the game it suddenly stops with the message "Host left the game".

Makes me wonder how I can be a host? All my options are "quick match" or "invite friends that you don't have because you never fucking use Steam".

I don't get this. It's ridiculous.

FINALLY managed to enter a match.

Aliens have too much HP although they don't move too fast per se.

Furthermore those who say that Marines are underpowered... I hate to break it to you.. but you suck. Marines aren't underpowered once you get the hang of it. Just don't hang out in the open, hug the walls and the melees wont be able to surprise you... often.

The only thing that can give the other classes an edge is the fact that Marines get stunned when they get a hit. This way they can't fire, move, whatever. They just get a knock-back every time until they die. Now THAT sucks.

The game also has an auto-lock on the melee-attacks which gives melee too much of an adventage. Once you're close enough to an enemy and start a melee attack, you'll hit him even if the enemy teleports to the other side of the map (if that was possible) before your hit fell. THIS, too, sucks.

Other than that.. well, I hate Multiplayer like this anyway but it's quite obvious that this game has a very good chance of being a great Singleplayer game!

I'm sure at this point there's some way to rip their head and spinal column from the body, but I was unable to figure it out.

The "E" Grab executes are random but I think your chance to rip their head+spines out is to Grab them from behind.

After so much negativity in this post I was expecting a dog of a demo, but I quite enjoyed it - reminded me of AVP2 multiplayer. It took about 45 seconds for me to find my first match, and the second was about 30 seconds so perhaps the problem last night was that not enough people were hosting servers (there are no dedicated servers as yet). I'll definitely be picking this up, as the other multiplayer modes should be more interesting.

Sir, could you please post some impressions of the gameplay? Im going to download the demo today after work, but I would still like to hear some impressions.

I've been at work all day, so this probably isn't as timely as you wanted, but anyway...

Graphically, the game looks better (on my machine anyway) than what I've seen in the gameplay videos - the textures don't look half as 'washed out' as in those videos, and I'm far from running an uber machine (2 MB RAM, athlon 6000 and Geforce 9800 GT).

The gameplay is a little slower than AVP2 - there's no more pouncing on hapless marines as an alien from 50 yards away, which IMO is a good thing. Also as an alien, the transition from walking over the ground to crawling over the walls and ceilings isn't quite as smooth as in AVP2 - there were a few occasions when I got 'stuck' to the ceiling when I wanted to drop down, and I ended up as pulse rifle fodder.

All three species are able to sprint by pressing the 'q' key, which is nowhere near as much an inconvenience as it sounds, but the alien is the quickest, able to close large distances fairly rapidly to make up for its lack of ranged weaponry.

Some may disagree, but I found the marine to be far from underpowered, as long as you keep on the move and make ample use of the sprint key. I didn't have any trouble taking down predators since the cloak they use generates a lot of electrical ripples which are easy to spot, but the alien is quite difficult to see, and you are often only aware of it when it is in your face, trying to interface its teeth with your brain. One of the best tactics I found as a marine was to pick up the sniper rifle and camp at the corner intersection between two long tunnels, that way I could pick anything off from a good distance. There are other weapons available to the marine, incuding a flamethrower (which I was useless with) and the auto-targeting assult rifle that Vasquez totes in Aliens (I forget the name of it).

The Predator is a strange beast, I found it to be the most difficult to achive kills with, but I think that was down to my lack of familiarity with its abilities. It can jump large distances (first you press shift to target the desired jump location then press spacebar to execute), and when in close proximity you can press 'e' to grab an enemy before killing them. I'm sure at this point there's some way to rip their head and spinal column from the body, but I was unable to figure it out. You can also pick up weaponry for the predator, but I didn't get much of a chance o try it out as the game was just ending when I found some.

Anyway, I was overall quite impressed, and would say that they've achieved quite a fair balance between the three species, with the alien at the moment (and possibly due to lack of familiarity) being ever so slightly more powerful than the other two species.

Edit: I never tried to rebind the keys, but some of the responses here would seem to indicate that that is possible.

Edit2: Evidently I got lucky this morning, as I've been 'searching for games' for the past twenty minutes with no joy. Rebellion, please fix this..

Bitching about connection problems on a pre-release demo is a bit pointless

That being said the game does unfortunately feel very sub-par. The graphics are rather poor, controls wonky and gameplay does not feel smooth or satisfying. The demo was a lot of fun though, then again almost every game is fun for the first hour or so.

Marine flashlight is useless and comes turned on as default. Best to just turn it OFF. Basic weapon is too inaccurate at long range. Aliens have a huge advantage as they move so quick you have no hope of hitting them. The only way to get kills as a marine is to get lucky with the grenade launcher, stumble on someone who doesn't know what he is doing or get in a good shot with the sniper rifle which is hard to find. Predator is over-powered when you get the mines and other weapons for him. Alien controls are wonky but they are overpowered as it is impossible to see them in the dark level as a marine and they can move behind you faster than you can get in the shots to kill them. Aliens also have too much HP.

Unless the other game modes are more balanced and fun I think the game will end up getting reviews in the 50-70% range. A shame.

Help here, please.

It felt a bit mushy to me as well no matter what species.
Unless Im not doing it right, they kinda fucked up the Aliens wall walking..it AVP2 it was seemless just holding down shift u could crawl from floor to wall. Here you have to press the 'transition' button..huh..it totally breaks up the mechanic and flow while you fumble to press the middle mouse button, which sometimes take 2 or 3 presses to get it to work right..grrrr

Does anyone else feel the mouse input isn't as responsive as it should be? I turned it up to max and it still feels a bit slow turning around. Maybe I just need a 180 degrees button ...

Heheh, just the way it should be! I remember this is the way it was in the original too. The marine was by far the most difficult to master but with some practice (and weaponry) they became killing machines in their own right.

"Searching for games"

Pathetic.

Multiplayer Only demos give very, very wrong impressions.

Keys are rebindable, nothing lets you kno how, but if you bind the same action to the same key twice it sets the alternative to 'n/a' to avoid double binding errors.

Having to rebind world and team chat seperately and other standard keys 3 times in a row for all characters is a bit annoying, should have a way to do that once overridding all 3, but with an option to have a per character override for all 3 individually if you want too.

That's not a ui report, it's my detailed gameplay report to date, as I can't actually get a "quick match" here in the UK, 1gig+ download and nothing to see bar an intro video and the options screens

Maybe in a few day's there will be some games :/

How does the marine handle with a Mouse + Keyboard? None of the gameplay videos do it justice since they are all made on the console. Also are the keys re-bindable? Seems like half the issues people are having here stems from the default keys chosen for each species...

Had a quick go on it before with a couple of other people and like others have said here I'm a little disappointed. I don't know if it's because ME2 was so goddamn awesome and was expecting the next Sci/fi game to kick ass as well - but the graphics look pretty bland and I didn't like the controls that much. That might be me just being a noob, though.

Didn't feel as fast as AVP2 - hopefully the full game plays a little better.
