US, UK, Japan Game Sales Decline 8%

MCV reports: "Global games decline measured at 8%," clarifying the globe in this case consists of the US, UK, and Japan. They quote a new Top Global Markets report from NPD, GfK-ChartTrack and Famitsu. We're not sure how the math on this adds up, but the bottom line is that sales have declined. Here's the somewhat confusing explanation: "According to the data, the decline was more modest in Japan which experienced a two per cent drop in software units (five per cent decline in console software and a one per cent decline in portable game software). The United States and UK saw respective declines of seven per cent and 14 per cent. In the USA, console and portable software experienced respective declines of seven per cent and eight per cent, while UK units saw respective declines of six per cent and 25 per cent."

It's not irrelevant if you're running a game studio...

It is because it only tells the retail sales part of the story and that for only three markets. This is almost as good as one of Pachter's "predictions".

Game Sales are only in decline because they track traditional retail store sales NOT digital distribution sales which includes (but isn't limited to): Steam, Direct2Drive, GamersGate, Impulse, Wii online, Playstation Network, Xbox Live, GOG, and so forth. That's the missing 8% percent; and I would wager the percentage is even higher.

TO bad they can't see digital sales.

F console sales.
Digital and DLC is the new sliced bread - and that can't be measured by any group.

This is right on the heels of Valve saying they exponentially increased their user base, MW2 selling billions, games coming off the shelves like crazy, console markets saying it was a great holiday season, Wii still in demand, WoW still going strong.

What a bunch of crap.
