Ships Ahoy - S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Viva Media and bitComposer Games announce that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat is now available in North America, offering the third installment in GDC Game World's first-person shooter series set in the vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear power plan accident. Word is: "Where most first person shooters rely on relentless action to engage their players, Call of Pripyat goes in an entirely different direction, allowing for long moments of silence amidst a desolate landscape and an ever changing vista. The environment is dynamic: day and night alternate and are filled with thunderstorms and sunshine, and the game's artificial intelligence interacts with itself beyond the peripheral of the player. The game truly takes on a life of its own."

Posted this on steam forums as well under my steam id. A little long on the lead because I only just picked up the game.

If anyone else was having issues with even getting into the game, it looks like it is due to the fact that STALKER: CoP is not compatible with the Steam in-game overlay yet.

To get yourself into the game, in Steam, go to File->Settings, then click the [in-game] tab.

Uncheck the "[ ]Enable Steam Community in-game" box.

STALKER:CoP should now run.

Note: this only fixes the problem where you can't even see the loading splash screen, not the in-game issues others are posting about.

$0.02: This is kind of a HUGE oversight here...you'd think someone would have checked that Steam Community worked before putting CoP up on Steam. :/

Technically it's been shipped for 4 months now, in russia and germany. Hence it's been well patched, and it's running on the same engine, so they've ironed thebugs out by now.

Check out the 2 reviews on gamerankings of the game. They say it's it's actually pretty bug free in their experience and it's definately the most polished at shipping stalker game to date.

I'm going to have to pass on this one for now. I bought too many games on sale that I need to play first, and I'm about to start up a new game of Fallout 3 GotY. I finished my first play through of non GotY right before I built my new system, now I want to play through with all of the DLC and some mods.

I never finished the first STALKER either. I liked the game, and I was pretty far into it when I stopped playing it. I was playing unpatched because the first patch broke save games and I didn't want to start over. I have my saved games backed up, but now that I have a new system I may install it, patch it up and start over since it has been a while.

The game was fun, the atmosphere was realistic and creepy at times. Sometimes I had to stop playing because my cat would make a noise behind me and scare the shit out of me and my nerves were already on edge.

I initially passed on Clear Sky because of the DRM, but I bought it on Steam when it was on sale for $5 during the holiday sales.

They aren't adding in a bunch of BS DRM for this one like they did for Clear Sky?

Sadly, I know that someone will screw up my order. I am sure this game will be on the Torrents tomorrow or Thurs so I will grab it there. More "head up their ass" distributors......

Will get it one way or the other but at least I did pay for it as I do with most games after a few months (and patches).

I think Amazon updated the expected availability. When I looked a few hours ago, I thought it showed it as available. But it shows "1-2 months" now for the Collectors Edition, which is the only version they seem to carry:

NewEgg has a listing, but doesn't say whether it's in stock:

The grenade spamming totally turned me off of Clear Sky. As much as I liked the original, I hated the spamming so much I quit playing and can't see my buying this unless they got rid of those kinds of issues.

For those that never played Stalker I would just start with Clear Sky. It is practically the same game, same sites, but much more improved.

Hmm...

It's not on Steam, D2D, or gamersgate.

The only version on Amazon says "ships within 1 to 2 months".

It's on Gamestop.

It's not on GoGamer.

I hope they fix that. I got a $10 credit at amazon for picking up Mass Effect 2.

The weight limits aren't that big a deal in my view, and if anything add a bit of realism to the inventory management. Plenty of games have encumbrance, including the one you quote in your sig Acleacius You can find a few artefacts to help raise your carrying weight too.

STALKER tries to make you feel vulnerable and not just a god running around with a Kalashnikov. Noone can run around carrying 60kg for very long.

But the CS time limits - yeah they're just plain annoying

Ratty don't worry about it, it can be extremely annoying even patched. The ridiculous time limits on the Side Quests and Weight Limits are very frustrating.

I am hesitant to suggest mods if you haven't completed it yet, however if your too frustrated or bored then mods will help.

If you could remember what made you stop playing, I bet there is a mod to fix it.

This makes me feel guilty. I never played very far in the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I just gave up after a few hours for no good reason. I know it's a great game but I could never get into it. Now every time I go to play another game it just sits there, looking at me.

Yeah, there was a UK/European version of SoC with a metal tin. If you're interested, Rhialto has some shots of the Clear Sky CEs from Russia and Poland. They were loaded with goodies.

http://www.rhialto.com/S.T.A.L.K.E.R./index.php

IMHO, Rhialto's self-produced coin is more meaningful though.

I think at one time I even saw a SHOC or CS collectors that was in a steel case! It was really neat looking but the pic didn't show any outstanding contents, just the metal case.

I really like when game companies offer a collectors edition. The Fallout 3 Lunchbox was really neat with the books and bobble head, I thought the Alarm Clock was a little over the top so skipped that.

I see these digital collectors editions and they leave me flat. Just initial bonuses to stats or new guns that everyone gets eventually all for extra $? Lames.

Yeah, Surf, I could be wrong but I think they're all "Collectors Edition." The version shown on the Gamestop website is also CE for $40. Maybe it's just for the initial pressing or two, and then it will revert to a regular edition.

A map, poster, and stickers isn't as fancy as the stuff they get in Europe. But it's more than we've ever got in North America before and I'm grateful for the extra treats. Especially at a $40 price point.

Can't wait to play this.

How does this compare to the other two? Clear Sky's emphasis on the terribly linear and its cheap use of previous maps really didn't do anything for me.

Is this more SHOC or more crappy CS?
