Ok, I'll bite. Why is your anecdotal evidence any better than his? Frankly, I could believe this "trick" works, and I could believe it doesn't -- neither would particularly surprise me.

The whole Pack a gun thing is bunk. TSA will do what they please, regardless of actual laws or rules. People have had ammo taken from their bags, gun cases confiscated - even though it was checked properly and sealed - and even had their firearms "lost".

The first rule of flying is always - Don't, unless you can't avoid it.

I remember when the Pro Bowl seemed to mean something to the players. Now with most of them multi millionaires they can take a trip to Hawaii every weekend if they don't already own a condo there. And what they have done to the game this year is a total joke. If that is the best they can come up with just name an all pro team and forget the game.
