That's all fine Narf except they're not even trying. It's probably the most cookie cutter MMO license cash-in I've ever seen. It actually moves the MMO genre backwards which I didn't think was possible.

I still think it was worth all the time and money I spent on it. I didn't go in expecting the second coming though. Star Trek is a tough franchise to tackle, with what, five TV shows and close to a dozen movies? All that variety means no matter what they do, it won't be perfect for everyone. As an MMO I think it's quite fun. Is it an epic title with a beautifully crafted and intricate story? No, it's an MMO. Does it have the most in-depth and complex tactics and strategy ever seen in a game? No, it's an MMO. For what it is and what I realistically expected it to be, I think it is very worthwhile and entertaining.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

Okay, testers; give over. How bad does this thing suck?

I'm with ant. It was ok. Not great. Still looking for that game that lets me relive trekmuse's combat (multiple bridge officers, true 3d combat shield facings, etc.

A friend of mine hit it on the head for me. It's basically pirates of the burning sea in space: 1 ship = 1 person, 2d shields/hull, etc. Although the crafting in pobs is better. Not a super fair comparison, but there it is.

to anyone from the STO staff who might fall across these forums (god help you) - thanks for the open beta and a chance to evaluate the product.

Character creation is good, it's all downhill from there. It's not that anything is outright terrible about it, it's just so bland and lifeless and formulaic MMO fare that it's boring from the second you start to move your character. It's Pirates of the Burning Sea crossed with Champions Online, minus the character that made Pirates at least a little interesting.

I like ship customization as well. There is enough there to make your starship unique. i don't recall ever looking at another ship and thinking that someone else had the same idea I did. I really like the custimization of the ships. I think they did great work there. I'd love to see more!
On my first ship, it seems limited. Do they add more options on later ships?

A few levels where people can get together will not cut the mustard. For the most part people want a persistent world. Instances should only be used to get friends and players together for missions and loot. There needs to be a real world feel or a game will just seem sub par.

Once again you make some valid points. Some of the PUG players do tend to goof off and other get killed outright in a blaze of glory ... which can be attributed to that alpha strike mechanic.

When you have a tight group (guildies or people you know) you can use tactics like let the largest cruiser go in first and take the larger ships and take the initial fire. The smaller ships pick off the frigates and fighters, with science vessels supporting the main cruiser. Glory hogs find they tend not to survive unless they have the ship to cope with an enemy alpha strike.

The 10km range on all weapons does kind of suck and does strike me as lazy. Varying weapon ranges would go a long way to fixing the alpha strike issue.

Eeeh, I can sympathise with what Veterator has written. I haven't dabbled in PvP at all as it doesn't interest me, but the PvE side does show promise. The randomly generated missions are cool when you first try them, but they need improvement. Ship combat varies and becomes a bit more complex when you're in a tier 2 ship, as you have to work your advantages more.

But, there's more wrong with STO than there is right. It's about a 65/35 split in that respect, and I honestly can't guess as to which way it'll swing in the next few months. I personally hope they fix the many, many, many issues with the game's UI, combat (especially ground), instancing, skills, bridge officer system, questing, end-game and crafting.

In summary, it's good for 2 year's work. But it's not good for a modern MMO. Not yet.

Sure MAYBE they will improve if in a few months...and MAYBE it won't suck then. And MAYBE pigs will fly by then. And MAYBE in a few more months Cryptic can pump out another MMO......Champions Online only came out September 2009. Glad I got to beta it before it went retail is all I can say.
Here's where I'm a little less cynical than you are. LotRO when it launched was pretty damn ordinary; a poor WoW clone set in Middle Earth, that had some nice features. Today LotRO is my MMO of choice, only getting better as WoW has slid down the slippery path of trying too hard to appeal to as many people as possible and becoming boring and bland ... World of Mallcraft.

Where am I going with my comparison? I find that STO is more standout than LotRO was at launch. If Cryptic put the work into it, it could be a really great game. Turbine did it ... let's hope Cryptic do it.

I just don't recall LOTRO being instanced to hell and back, so there was player interaction on some level besides when you decided to go to town. I know that the chapter events were instanced so they could do the storyline and cutscenes...but I recall a lot of the quests taking place in areas where you'd see other people working on stuff. STO TRIES to do a little on the fly team work stuff by grouping you with people entering the same mission instances as you at the same point..but it just isn't the same. The instances scale up with people.....and often times people just goof off. Plus grouping against NPCs in this game became whoever attacked first died because the enemies would alpha strike you to death. If you flew up first, shot the first bad guy...they'd all turn to fire and around the same time all of them would volley their torpedoes...all of them would hit your shield near the same time and you'd either die outright or be so hurt that you might as well have died.

And yes maybe they can fix the combat some, but it still doesn't change the fact that everything quest related is instanced. So if STO is going to go the way LOTRO did, they will need to find a way to cut out the instancing or make it so the instances are large enough to support a 50 or so player count like City of Heroes and it's instanced town versions.

And this is ignoring the fact that I have heard nothing about the end game stuff, so this combat could change drastically or be more of the same later.

I'd say give it 6 months and hope they open up some free trials. I just can't see 2 months being anything but balancing/nerfing stuff since that's historically what Cryptic does for the first few months.

I played the beta for a couple of days: It's Champions Online with a different skin. Boring and tedious.

What made WoW and Everquest so popular is you wanted to go around and explore things---while always afraid that something would jump out and get you. With this game (and with Champions) its "Oh look, and bad guy. Click click click. Dead. Oooh, and other bad guy. Click click click."

Boring.

Will this ST:O have any quests like stuff from original series or ST:E? Like go back in time? That would be sweet.

Or even better, Mirror, Mirror when everything is reversed (e.g., Federation is evil).

I am hoping they do a free account with limitations like in Age of Conan (still need to try this MMOG).

This would help a lot if they did this with Klingons. Very few people even play klingons so the pvp que's tend to take a long time to start a game because there isn't anyone to fight against... If it was free I wouldn't mind being a klingon in the game. There is almost nothing for you to do in the game besides pvp...so it's not surprising that so few people spend time on that side.

That's it in a nutshell. Don't buy this right now. If you want to go lifetime then I suppose you have to buy now but the game is going to have to get major work done over the next month or 2. I imagine playing it through those changes will just leave you bitter and frustrated. So I'll check back later, it was sometimes fun, and I hope they improve it a lot in the next few months.

5. Re: Star Trek Online End of Beta Event Jan 26, 2010, 15:36 Veterator

I've been playing the beta for the last couple weeks. These last few days I could barely bring myself to play, I'd login and see if they made it any less tedious for an hour or so and that's about it. I don't know if I could even stand to try the end of beta event, I suspect the server will crash if it's very popular. And Im not sure how it'll work with how instanced the game is....I saw 50 people tops in the starbases/cities. And everything else had 12 or less when it was PVP instances.

The crafting in the game is minimal, and doesn't seem to work correctly past the first few tiers of items. It all takes place in Memory Alpha....which I think atm is kind of a pointless place. It may be less pointless if people use it as sort of a bazaar...but I doubt it'll happen.

The PVP in the game is boring, it usually boils down to Klingons hiding behind their cloaks and federation turtling up in a big clump waiting. The matches should take at most 15-20 minutes, but often times it takes double or triple that time frame because of the hide and go seek of it all. It's really really boring 95% of the time. The other 5% consists of lag and being gang banged by the whole enemy fleet no matter what side you're on. If you don't focus fire, the fights take ages....and people will usually run away.

The PVE of the game consists of ground and space. Ground is boring as hell, it's like an FPS in slow motion. Takes tons of shots to kill something....and there are a lot of ground based missions where basically if your whole team doesn't group up and go..stuff spawns so fast you can't make any progress. They will literally spawn behind you as you take on the next group of crap.

The space PVE is more fun, but after tier1 (the recently made it easier and had a bug where the higher tiers were easier)...the combat starts taking ages. And you're usually alone in most fights unless you team up or join fleet actions. I liked it for awhile, but after it started taking me 30+ minutes to do a solo mission every mission part..got too bored to care. There's just no "fun" in it when every non-shuttle sized ship takes 5 minutes to kill unless you get extremely lucky with the timing on all of your shots. But it usually boils down to you flying in circles for 4 of the 5 minute fight....yay.

And the Klingon race is PVP focused, and because their queue system is stupidly setup..it's infuriating. It takes probably 20-30 minutes to join a queue most times. You can only queue into 3 different PVP instances at a time...there's usually about 10-12 of them..never stopped to count em out because most of them are ground based and I despise ground missions. After a PVP match ends (I discussed above how long they take) the queue system holds you hostage for a few minutes..perfect for smack talk. Because each side can see each others zone chat THE WHOLE MATCH. So you'll say something, someone from the other team will respond...because there's no fancy way to tell whose on your team. Since the queue system doesn't auto-team you or offer any easily used raid interface so you can target teammates to use abilities on them. So you are forced to make your own teams.....just a stupid stupid setup. Then the rest of the Klingon stuff is a few PVE missions which is really generic.

You get 3 character slots. You either buy more at their store or get more in your game package on the more expensive packages/subs. There are 3 classes tactical, engineer, science. No idea if they are even remotely balanced via their skills since there's no good listing of their skills past level 20 or so. Any class can use any kind of ship....they are science vessels, escorts, and cruisers. (heal/buff, DPS, tank). This just allows you more and higher rank abilities in the specific type of vessels. Science vessel = science, escorts = tactical, cruisers = engineer.

The game isn't bad, but for an IP like Star Trek. If I were trying to maintain it's value, I would be very pissed off at what this game offers. The sounds of the game are about the most correct thing in it...

Um, you didn't need to preorder to play open beta for the last two weeks or so. I got mine from FilePlanet with a non-subscriber account.

It's not awful. It was better than I expected. It wasn't great either. And I am a Trekker/Trekkie.

Who is trying this beta's endgame? I wished I could play but I am at work. I hope players can record the actions!
