Crate Announces Grim Dawn

Crate Entertainment announces Grim Dawn, an upcoming action/RPG planned for release later this year, aided by funding from fans willing to preorder the game. Crate Entertainment was formed by veterans of defunct developer Iron Lore Entertainment, and will use the Iron Lore engine used in Titan Quest. The Grim Dawn Website is online outlining their hopes for a fan funded future, and a description of Grim Dawn follows.

Players will be thrust into the dark, war-torn world of Cairn where a once proud empire has been brought to ruin and the human race driven to the edge of extinction. Cairn has become ground zero of an eternal war between two otherworldly powers, one seeking to use human bodies as a resource, the other intent upon destroying the human race before that can happen. This cataclysmic war has not only decimated human civilization but is warping the very fabric of reality and, in its wake, giving life to new horrors.

For humankind it is the dawn of a grim new age where iron has replaced gold as currency and the importance of salt as a weapon makes it far too valuable to waste on food. Small enclaves of human survivors exist scattered throughout the world, holed up in hidden refuges. These humans have quietly watched the warring invaders destroy one another and have become wise to the strengths and vulnerabilities of their otherworldly foes. A few survivors have begun to exhibit strange new abilities after surviving possession or exposure to the warp. These unnatural powers are feared by some but give many new hope of launching a resistance to fight the "outsiders" and reclaim what's left of their world.

Still, hearing that they're reusing the Titan Quest engine makes me wonder if they aren't going to have a very hard time competing with Torchlight for the digitally-distributed, action RPG, indie game crown. Also interesting that in the interview they consider "even just" 100,000 sales enough to break even, and put that forward as not only a small number, but small enough to allow them to cater exclusively to a hardcore niche (and now be fan-funded).

They're really two completely different games. All reports are (from lots of posts from Crate employees on the Titan Quest message boards and from other general announcements/posts they've made over the past several months) that the game is going to be TQ's spiritual successor.

Torchlight revolves around nothing but dungeon crawling and some REALLY basic classes. Don't get me wrong, I love the game to death, but it's incredibly simple.

TQ had more classes (five are announced for Grim Dawn) and combined them, meaning you could be a warrior/spellcaster with rather deep, fully fleshed-out skill trees rather than the truncated yet high-powered bits that Torchlight offers.

On the other hand, I think that people that love one game may very likely love the other, and simply enjoy having the two co-exist. Hell, I know I'm in that camp myself...

Oh, and Black Legion was the cancelled game they were working on back when they were Iron Lore. That game is gone for good as they were unable to secure the rights to it when they formed Crate. I wish I had some sources for that, but I can't seem to find the appropriate posts. My message board search-fu is weak right now.
