DICE on Bad Company 2 Servers

Eurogamer has word from DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke who explains that DICE makes "no profit" from the rental of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 servers, saying they are not publicly distributing dedicated server software to "protect the game's integrity on PC." While saying, "This does not earn DICE a profit," he leaves open the door to future policy changes by adding: "But we will see where the game goes and support it post launch."

Has your team made any cross-platform games on the current generation of hardware? At the studio where I work, we have three different programmers each handling the networking for one platform. The core networking code is the shared but each platform requires its own lobby, matchmaking, voice chat, invite, party, etc, handling. Most bugs are cross-platform because they stem from assets rather than code. However, there are many platform-specific bugs and this is because there's a lot of platform-specific code. Even without dedicated servers, the PC version requires its own unique code to handle the elements I've mentioned.

As I sad before, members of my team worked on the Xbox and the PC versions of a particular title. Issues are the same. Hardware just changed. Since that time, they have gone on to work at other studios on the newer platforms, but we still talk shop when we get together and many of the conversations are on just this issue. We talk about compartmentalizing the platform specific code in ways to be able to separate platform specific issues from core code (or, as you brought up, asset) problems. Maybe your team handles it differently. What I'm saying, and what times we spent talking about this issue in my circle, we pretty much came to the conclusion that IW was doing their best to make sure as little code changed as possible between platforms. When you look at the PC, 360, and PS3 versions of the game, aside from the fact that one relies on mouse and KB, and the other two have gamepads, they're almost indistinguishable.

In our eyes, it only made sense, especially since it looks like Activision wants to pop one of these games out every 12 months now.

I don't think your English is daft, I just don't think you've done sufficient research on the subject.

When Activision's own people tell you that their latest game outsold the previous version on a particular platform, what more do you need? NPD numbers, as mentioned by others, don't include Steam purchases, which anyone outside of Valve and Activision would just be guessing at. You make it sound like there is a great conspiracy on behalf of IW and Activision to overinflate numbers that everyone knows are record-setting. If you truly believe that they want to kill off the PC, or say that the platform doesn't matter anymore, they should be doing just the opposite.

I said that people should stop complaining and do something about it.

Two problems here:

1) Half of your sentence tells people to stop complaining.
2) You assume that complaining and taking action are mutually exclusive.

What??? Now you're trying to cut my sentences in half? Come on. That is pretty weak. I said action is more effective than words. In order to stop something, implicitly something had to have started. In this case, complaining about a lack of a certain feature set in the game. I honestly believe any reasonable person here would get the point of what I'm saying. You seem stuck on just trying to come out on top based on semantics of language.

Okay. Are all your friends hardcore PC gamers? Do they play consoles as well? In any case, it's anecdotal evidence, as I doubt your friends are representative of every PC gamer who complained about MW2.

Well, considering we're grown men talking on TS3 for a few hours a week while enjoying a good night of gaming on rigs we spent far too much on, I'd say yes. And that is relevant, because....?

Jerykk wrote on Jan 17, 2010, 00:07:
You told people to stop complaining and vote with their wallets. That statement requires that they do one or the other, since you think they are mutually exclusive. Therefore, you did tell people to stop complaining.

No it doesn't. It simply says that since you complained already, that action is a far more effective tool once you've made your opinions known. Stating the same thing over and over is, well, redundant. Kinda like this whole conversation.

I *did* say that before crapping all over someone's work one should consider that the reason that it was done may not be evil or malicious, but maybe, just maybe, they were trying to do something good for their game.

Good for their game or good for business? I don't really see how stifling the mod community and taking control away from players is good for the game or for the community.

You're not seeing it because you're stuck on the fact that they took away mod tools, rather than looking at the other technical reasons that they might have for doing this.

As for the whole biz thing, if it was a bad call for the game, their sales would be in the toilet. Clearly that is not the case.

Look, I'm not saying I like the fact that they aren't allowing mods to their game, but not everyone is going to have the same values on the topic. Is some of what they did irritating? Sure. That host migration thing really blows. But overall, it still plays well, and aside from the occasional Aimbot user (which VAC takes care of nicely, though not immediately), it's really not that bad. Certainly no worse than CoD4.

In my opinion.
