What differences there are in XBL, Playstation, and PC "networks" was eliminated by how they were reduced to providing the same core functions.
You can't eliminate the core differences in platforms. Xbox Live doesn't handle invites or matchmaking the same way PSN does. I don't think PSN even has party system. The programmers have to create that themselves. For the PC, everything has to be created. Each platform requires special accommodations. Just because the game has the same basic high-level functionality on all platforms doesn't mean that the programming is the same across them.
This is all a moot point, though, because DICE has already created dedicated server support for the PC version. The console versions don't have dedicated servers. The issue here is not a technical one but a business one.
As for "IW understood this with CoD4" howso? That game was as annoying as hell to try and mod (when "tools" were finally made available), and proved to be a support nightmare for them by virtue of the fact that each platform did everything differently.
With CoD4, IW provided the following:
1) Lean.
2) Public dedicated servers.
3) Console commands.
4) Mod support.
PC-centric features. Was the mod support the greatest? No, but at least it was there which is a lot more than can be said for MW2 or BFBC2.
As for mods being a "support nightmare," I'm not really sure what you mean. Publishers and developers do not offer support for unofficial mods and mods are only possible on the PC version so platform differences are irrelevant.
As is evident by the PC sales of MW2, which far outpaced that of MW1
Last reports from NPD and the UK charts show PC sales of MW2 as being disappointing. Those charts don't account for digital downloads, of course, but since nobody ever releases those numbers, it's hard to say how well the game is doing on PC.
The funny thing is most people complain, yet still buy the game.
I don't think you have any statistical evidence to support that. While I'm sure there are some people who complain but buy the game anyway, I think it's logical to assume that there are many people who don't buy games from developers/publishers that make decisions they disagree with. In any case, as I stated before, complaining and not buying games are not mutually exclusive options. Therefore, telling people to choose one or the other is just silly.
The harsh reality is that it's probably going to get worse before it gets better when it comes to EA and Activision. They are totally invested in multi platform titles with a rapid development cycle. And while the budgets they throw at games now are almost insane, even with those budgets, the studios are pressed to put that capital on the screen, rather than into offline features demanded by the vocal minority (which we are, unfortunately).
I agree. However, recognizing the reality of a situation doesn't mean I should embrace it nor does it mean I should stifle my criticism as you have suggested we should.
Again, everyone understands the current gaming climate and the realities of multiplatform development. We understand why publishers and developers do the things they do. None of this changes the fact that we don't like it and are free to voice our opinions on the internet.
