I'd agree with you if it was only story was jettisoned but there's not enough character classes versus Diablo 2 or even Sacred 2. And it has no multiplayer. And then places like IGN slobber all over it anyway.

torchlight gets my award for "most curiously overrated by professional reviewers" in 2009.

I don't buy this. I went into it after reading reviews, paraphrasing it was described basically as Diablo-lite with some improved aspects and less emphasis on story. That's exactly what I received.

I will never purchase an FPS title on the PC which doesn't have dedicated servers in some shape or form.

That goes for me as well, assuming the game is mp-centric.

As for the percentages, there's no way to really know what the ratio is but I'm sure it fluctuates between about 5-15% maybe? Which is the ratio that COD4 got as well... about 2 million PC copies sold out of a total of 15 million. But since we're throwing out numbers based on assumptions, I'm going to say that I think their lost sales due to no dedicated servers is a small fraction of one percent of their total revenue.

It doesn't make their decision the correct one for their players on the PC platform. A good business decision is quite often at the expense of your consumers, most of whom don't know any better. Personally I don't care if it sold 100 copies or 100,000,000, I will never purchase an FPS title on the PC which doesn't have dedicated servers in some shape or form. If I wanted a P2P experience that worked, I'd do it on the consoles.

They had a limited list but there were plenty of games on the list (and they accepted Wii/PS3/360 games) that were worth trading in for it, and I ended up getting the PC version of the game.

The point still stands, there were deals out there to get the game cheap.

L4D2 games frequently suffer major lag because of the poor matchmaking / networking and the game is fundamentally broken on multi-GPU setups (requiring you to alt-tab at the start of each level). So while the core game might be very enjoyable when everything works right that's very different to calling them great games. Personally I think L4D2 is a shadow of the original - it lost all the atmosphere the first game had and spams more special infected at you.

I personally think that L4D2 is much improved over L4D in every respect except the characters who had much more of a personality in the first game than the second. As for multi-gpu issues... I'm using SLI and I haven't had any problems. Not denying that this or other quirks exist... At least a couple of times now I've had Versus games where one team got a tank and the other didn't... Talk about a bug that totally unbalances the game eh? But it is better and more enjoyable than most games out there, and Valve do keep updating the game to make it better, so I don't really mind it that much.

I agree. I wrote it in a moment of frustration when all I see is people complaining and bitching about anything and everything. So much negativity pervades the site some times that it sucks all the fun out of gaming, which is ironic and a little sad.

I know, huh? When screenshots surface with 3/4 of the Steam "Boycott Modern Warfare 2" group showing ingame in Modern Warfare 2 that doesn't exactly strengthen your cause. That level of hypocracy is legendary...almost Dagok-like.
God I'm sick of this fucking myth. 3/4's of that front and single page were playing CoD4:MW2. That's far from 3/4 of the group. The front pages are players currently playing games and considering that screenshot was taken at launch it would be easy to see a large percentage playing a game that was just launched.

So yes it is unfortunate that many retards joined a boycott group and then bought the game THE NIGHT IT CAME OUT but that doesn't mean that 3/4 of the group bought the game.

I wasn't part of the group but I did warn my communities and personal friends. Out of the few who did buy it that I've talked to, it sounds like their initial indifference has turned to straight hate for the constant cheaters and inability to find a decent host.

Yup. Both MW2 and L4D2 are great games, and it's good to see them selling well, despite the whining and bitching and boycotts and petitions and what not. Both games have sold millions of copies on the PC, and it proves that the platform is still viable for AAA games despite the irrelevant minority crying like babies.
Both games demonstrate a clear misstep in the future of PC gaming. L4D2 games frequently suffer major lag because of the poor matchmaking / networking and the game is fundamentally broken on multi-GPU setups (requiring you to alt-tab at the start of each level). Gamestop had a GREAT deal where ya traded in a game or 2 and got it for 30 bucks. 30 BUCKS!

Any game? Or a new game that still sells for $50-60 new? If it's the latter, it doesn't seem like a very good deal to me. You trade in $100+ worth of games and get a $30 off one game.

Not all the games are the same. Activision set the price, and the number proved that regardless of price or lack of dedicated servers that people STILL bought the game, AND (wait for it) ARE ENJOYING IT!

The had the same thing for Assassin's Creed 2, and are doing the same thing for Bioshock 2.

Yea, we obviously won't know any sorts of real figures from Steam and all we can do is make educated guesses. If you think that MW2 being in the top 5 sellers even through the Holiday Sale period (when it was surrounded by massive discounts) still doesn't qualify for a "This might actually be selling very well" then I don't know what to say.

There was also an interview of a Valve employee which I read a few weeks ago (and I can't find now, sadly) where he was asked how well MW2 was selling... He was obviously reluctant to even hint at any sort of specifics, but he did mention that it was one of the best selling 3rd party games on Steam ever. But, of course, without numbers, it's possible he was talking about the 20 copies a day of the game which have sold through Steam.

As for the percentages, there's no way to really know what the ratio is but I'm sure it fluctuates between about 5-15% maybe? Unless, of course, you wish to believe that the Steam top sellers list and concurrent players list is a marketing conspiracy and that Bowling has to be lying... In which case, yea, it can't be proved.

Conspiracy? No, nothing that complex. Expected PR bullshit? Possibly. Until they release actual sales figures, I'll take whatever Bowling says with a grain of salt. Remember, he also said that IW.net would be better than dedicated servers. Being a Steam topseller doesn't mean much when they never release actual sales figures. For all we know, selling 20 copies a day might be all it takes to be on top of the Steam list.

That's probably the comparative ratio of console to PC revenues for all multiplatform releases. Having 10% of the total revenue share is why the PC gets less focus than consoles.

It depends entirely on the game and the amount of effort put into the PC version. It's the mentality of "Oh, the PC version is going to sell like crap anyway so let's not put any effort into it" that results in PC sales only bringing in 10% of total revenue. I'm pretty sure the PC version of Dragon Age comprises more than 10% of total sales. Similarly, didn't the PC version of Bioshock make up 50% of sales? If IW hadn't been retarded and released MW2 PC with all the features of CoD4, I'm pretty sure they'd be getting a lot more PC sales right now.

Has Activision released any sales figures? The last NPD figure for MW2 showed that it only sold 170k. http://kotaku.com/5426474/report-modern-warfare-2-pc-us-retail-sales-about-170000-in-november. In the UK, it only sold 53,400. http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/51467/Modern-Warfare-2-U-K-PC-Sales-Lagging-Way-Behind. On Amazon, it's only sold 8% of total sales. http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/11/01/pc-modern-warfare-2-sells-less-than-a-tenth-of-total-on-amazon-c/.

It's possible that Steam sales have fared much better but until they release actual numbers, it's hard to tell. In retail, MW2 PC looks to be a failure.

Just a couple of days ago, Robert Bowling mentioned on the Infinity Ward forums that they had 'millions of PC gamers playing the game (non concurrently)'. I wouldn't say multiples of millions, but I think they must have sold at least a million. From the concurrent players list on Steam (which consistently tops out at over 120,000) and the fact that MW2 has been a top seller on the service since it's release, I think one can safely extrapolate that there must be at least a million sales. Unless, of course, you wish to believe that the Steam top sellers list and concurrent players list is a marketing conspiracy and that Bowling has to be lying... In which case, yea, it can't be proved.

The figures you linked... 170k and 53k are for retail sales 20 days after release in the US and 5 days after release in the UK respectively. The data considers only retail sales of only 2 markets for a period of a few days after the product's release, and is outdated now. On the other hand, the 8-10% figure sounds about right to me... That's probably the comparative ratio of console to PC revenues for all multiplatform releases. Having 10% of the total revenue share is why the PC gets less focus than consoles.
