I don't mind regulated, yet DEDICATED servers one bit. Look, you'll still have your communities and clan servers. I for one will not miss filtering through 50 different types of servers with who knows what flavor of mod on it, trying to find a clean and pure server to play on. One where I don't have to question it's integrity or download 80 files.
I think this is a great compromise. Player/Clan administrated servers with a standard ruleset to choose from. |

Flexibility is nice but without control it's like having a state without laws in a country with no constitution. The PC has always been the wild west of gaming and it's worked fine for the past 15 years with free, publicly-available dedicated servers. BF:BC2 is still going to pirated and there's still going to be cheating. These things are inevitable, which makes the lack of public dedicated servers all the more retarded.

No, but you can try to do it better if you think it's not ok what they want to do with and how they want to protect their product. That's a hell of a straw man argument you've got going there. There is a massive difference between denying that they have the right to do as they wish with their property and taking them to task for the hypocrisy of pandering to negative feelings towards IW, as they very publicly did, then essentially doing the same thing as IW.

The only thing I hear is whining about some (understandable) reasons for preventing piracy and/or cheating. Even the pricing of this title is on the market's normal level. Flexibility is nice but without control it's like having a state without laws in a country with no constitution. Give them a solid and most of all cheap solution how to get flexibility AND prevent piracy and/or cheating instead of whining about how they do it. This whole post was an utter bunch of crap. SO we are supposed to develop their games for them now? |

But the advantages for DICE in not giving the files to public use is clear: 1. they can control which GSP hosts a server 2. no server-side hacks to bypass serial checks for the clients (win for EA/DICE *and* fair to the paying players) 3. harder to build hacks/cheats which were developed by studying the client-server packets in depth (win for DICE *and* the fair-players). Players don't care about the advantages to DICE or EA. They care about the advantages to players. When publishers control the servers, that gives players less control. If EA wants to shut down a server, they can. Want to host a server with mods? Too bad. Not providing players with the dedicated server app is a slap in the face to one of PC gaming's biggest strengths: flexibility.
I see BFBC2 more of a financial step to fund a BF3 development where the modding community should be supported! I keep seeing references to BF3, as if it will be completely different from everything DICE has made since BF2. Logic dictates that it will be more of the same. Designed for consoles, no lean, no prone, no public dedicated servers, no mods, etc. That is, if BF3 is even being developed. Based on what they're doing with BF:BC2 multiplayer, it looks like they are trying to turn it into BF3.
Remember the "MW2 we want dedicated servers" steam group? Even if you argue here this picture told me that there is still a 50/50 chance that you will buy the game. Except for the minor fact that Steam does not consist of 50% Bluesnews readers.

One question to all the "haters": Was there ever one game in the history of the Battlefield series for the PC where there were ONLY official EA (dedicated) servers? Even the Gamespy auth servers for BF42 are still running...
I think they will give some kind of trust and/or contract to GSPs for hosting dedicated servers which you can rent. LAN is the big downside but I think in times of fast and lag-free internet for everybody that is not a big loss. I have to wait till its out but I think on my 16K/1M ADSL connection could take a 4 player squad mini-LAN when playin on the internet.
No mod support? I'am fine with this this time. I see BFBC2 more of a financial step to fund a BF3 development where the modding community should be supported!
I suggest to wait until it's out before sending out apocalyptic prayers. Remember the "MW2 we want dedicated servers" steam group? Even if you argue here this picture told me that there is still a 50/50 chance that you will buy the game. I did not but I will support DICE and buy BFBC2 - hey... it's the first ever PC BFBC!

| So only official EA servers that people will have to rent, what kind of lame shit is that. Guess I won't be buying this one either even if it's a good game until I know exactly where servers will and can be located. |

DDI wrote on Jan 8, 2010, 19:57: Ummm MW2 has prone. Indeed it does. I guess I was a bit too vague in my comparison. I was referring to the lack of lean in MW2, which 'true' PC gamers have complained about ad infinitum. To the point where the phrase - "It's not balanced for ...." became something of an internet meme to ridicule any flaws, real or otherwise, that MW2 has. DICE has basically stated (in not as many words, but the gist remains) that their gameplay and maps are not balanced for going prone. Seeing as how these 'true' PC gamers have to hate Infinity Ward and thus have no choice but to support DICE and their decisions, it is not surprising that this equally absurd excuse for not including the ability to go prone has been completely ignored.

The fact that the dedicated servers were going to be rent only was picked up from the wording of that "suck it down IW" faq they posted, I didn't realise anyone was under any doubt about that bit...
edit: as in the FAQ they posted right after the MW2 multiplayer shitstorm

Prez wrote on Jan 8, 2010, 18:29: Okay color me confused. What exactly does "while the game will make use of them, the software will not be distributed: "We will not distribute these publicly." mean? Are there going to be dedicated servers or not? And let me add a "WTF?" for no mod tools. This means that the game will have dedicated servers, but only from EA approved Game Service Providers. In other words, if you want a dedicated server, you have to rent it from a specific list of providers. You cannot setup your own server if you wanted to. They will basically control access to those dedicated servers, and I guess this also means they can limit or deny it whenever they please.
Prez wrote on Jan 8, 2010, 18:29: I can't believe they are going to try and get cute about this after the big deal they made about having dedicated servers and rubbing it in IW's face.
It amuses me that people are surprised that a company will look out for number one. All these months of 'true' PC gamers worshiping DICE like they were the messiahs who would 'save' multiplayer gaming from the likes of the 'evil' Infinity Ward... and now their list of features looks quite similar to MW2... no prone, no mods, no public dedicated servers... A very amusing irony |

EDIT: Oh, I get it: Madden '09 all over again. Forget it - this just got crossed off my list. If the single player is good, I'll pick it up out of the bargain bin at some point.

I guess LAN parties are dead as well.
