| I had no doubt MW2 would be heavily pirated given how IW chose to handle the PC release. Normally I uphold the basic concept that a developers and publisher's time, effort and expenditure of resources deserve due recompense by the people who use their product. But int this case, I say that it serves them right. Dumbasses. |

HEY, those were the very words I was going to use to explain the rampant amount of thieft commited against the pc platform!!! That's actually correct. PC piracy is very accessible and convenient, which is why it's far more prevalent than console piracy.
But keep justifying it. I'm not justifying piracy. I'm explaining why MW2 hasn't been selling so hot on the PC.
Bottom line is People WANTED this game (4 million illegal downloads). Those who steal stole, and it was as easy as clicking a button. It doesn't require intense desire to download a game for free. The cheaper something is, the more likely people are to take it, even if they don't really want it. Refer to the Steam holiday sales. A lot of games that people had no interest in before but picked up anyway because they were so cheap. Free is about as cheap as you can get so downloading a pirated game doesn't exactly establish anything.
Consoles are static and easy to program for and pc software theft just keeps raping the pc gaming market to the point of non existence. PS3 is definitely not easy to program for. 360 is pretty easy but you still have to deal with hardware constraints. Trust me, developers do not like being stuck with 512 megs of memory, nor do they like having to fit their game onto a 6.8 GB DVD. Data streaming is also a major issue, as is maintaining 30 FPS. However, consoles still sell very well because of their ease and convenience and this is why developers continue to focus on them. If piracy disappeared, this wouldn't change.
I know this isn't an apples to apples comparison but a developer from Runic went as far to add an option in the .ini file to turn off the screen shake because a poster mentioned it would cause motion sickness for him/her. Its not difficult to figure out which developer gets my undying love and money. Wait, are you suggesting that PC gamers have different standards than console gamers and that providing them with the exact same game won't result in stellar PC sales? Nonsense! After all, IW repeatedly stated that PC gamers would love IW.net and that providing the exact same game as the console versions is better for everyone. Surely IW knows best!

I have no interest in the Call of Duty games, nor do I download/pirate games. That said, the giant "fuck you" IW gave PC gamers before this release provoked me to the point where I downloaded a bit-torrent client just so I could boost the numbers (I didn't actually end up downloading it, bandwidth is too expensive here to make that kind of protest.)
I hope IW get the message and let the billion dollar door hit them in the arse on their way out. I'm reminded that in the same year that Infinity Ward went Gestapo, Runic Games not only released a game with a campaign twice as long as MW2's, but an editor, complete with all their assets, for a third of the price. I know this isn't an apples to apples comparison but a developer from Runic went as far to add an option in the .ini file to turn off the screen shake because a poster mentioned it would cause motion sickness for him/her. Its not difficult to figure out which developer gets my undying love and money.

And because the only thing that truly does matter is sales....Well, look at the numbers. Consoles are static and easy to program for and pc software theft just keeps raping the pc gaming market to the point of non existence.
It sucks, but there it is. Yeah, we all know its not the only factor. But don't lie to yourself ether. |

Tony!!! wrote on Dec 29, 2009, 19:26: Its the most successful because of its flagship platform, the Xbox. Look at the pirate numbers on xbox vs the pc. Look how many more copies were SOLD on the xbox vs pc. PC doesn't even come close.
What's amazing is that people still justify stealing software and deny the demize of pc gaming.
THIS is what has screwed the pc gamer.
You don't think the lousy sales (based on NPD at least) of the PC version have anything to do with the sheer amount of negative hype the game had before release? Lack of dedicated servers, modding, console commands, lean, $60 price tag, dismissive IW PR, etc. IW screwed the PC gamer and in doing so, screwed themselves out of PC sales. Every PC game gets pirated yet they continue to sell enough to warrant making. If IW is disappointed with their PC sales, maybe they should reconsider the complaints that they so easily dismissed with MW2.
I'm really tired of people using piracy as a scapegoat for the state of PC gaming. If piracy ceased to exist, console games would still sell more because there are simply more console gamers. Consoles sell because of their accessibility and convenience, neither of which have anything to do with piracy. If piracy was the deciding factor behind platform support, PS3 would be the lead platform for most games because it has ZERO piracy. However, this isn't the case. 360 is the lead platform for most games because 360 games sell the most. Sales are the only thing that matters.
