On ME2 Save Game Imports & New ME2 Trailers

The Mass Effect Media section has two new gameplay trailers from Mass Effect 2, one titled "Assassin," and the other titled "Savage." Also, the Mass Effect Community Forums have more on the previously revealed ability to import saved games from Mass Effect into Mass Effect 2, the upcoming sequel to BioWare's RPG (thanks nin). The update adds some new details:

Up until now we have only discussed the plot impacts of this feature, however, there are also certain gameplay perks as well. If you finished ME1 as a high level character you will receive greater bonuses than those who finished at lower levels. Ex, if you finished ME1 as a level 35 character, you will receive a bonus, but if you finished ME1 as a level 50 character, your bonus will be larger. That being said these bonuses will not put new playthrough characters at a severe disadvantage. For example, some of these bonuses include a monetary boost at the start of the game, or additional research resources for use at the Normandy’s Tech Lab. Another perk is if you finished the game as a Paragon or Renegade, part of your alignment will carry over making it easier to access certain dialogue options.

Finally, some technical information regarding the feature as well. If players start a New Game + after beating the game they will be able to re-use the same character import file they did for their first playthrough. Yes New Game + is making a return to Mass Effect 2! Additionally as mentioned above, make sure you are playing on your Xbox 360 profile that you completed ME1 on and that the profile and save data is present on the Hard Drive and not a MU. If you want to do a quick check and make sure you are good to go, load up Mass Effect 1 and see if the New Game + option appears. That will let you know your save game is ready for Mass Effect 2.

We are definitely excited to share this brand new feature with everyone, and remember what you do in Mass Effect 2, will have consequences in Mass Effect 3!

Just hope they can clean up the console issues that crippled the PC release. Worst of all the lack of editor which can normally be used to fix broken open world games, even DA has benefited greatly.

I wouldn't expect to see any modding tools for ME2. 360 is the lead SKU.

They would have been much better off offering Turn based or with Spacebar as in KotOR style combat for PC at least.

I don't think turn-based gameplay would have really worked. ME was a shooter first and foremost, even if the combat wasn't all that great. It was a very easy shooter too and you really didn't need your squadmates. Bioware has claimed that the combat is much improved in ME2 but we shall see.

The concept just seems odd, why kill off/lose your whole crew, if the carrying over from a previous Save, when you could just add new NPCs to choose from?

Yeah, it does seem kind of weird that you can't (apparently) use any of the companions from the first game in the sequel. I think it would have been better to carry over most of them (depending on the choices you made in the first game), then let you replace/supplement them with new companions. That said, we don't really know how big a part your previous allies will play in the sequel. Their presence could be entirely superficial or it might significantly impact your experience.
