Jagged Alliance 3 Cancelled?

German site GameStar.de reports that Akella is no longer developing Jagged Alliance 3, not very long before the projected Q1 2010 release date for the turn-based strategy/RPG sequel (thanks WorthPlaying). The reason for the change is not clear, but they report publisher Strategy First retains the rights to the franchise. The Jagged Alliance series has bounced around quite a bit over the years since the demise of SirTech, MiST land was once developing Jagged Alliance 3 and at one point there were three "Alliance" titles in development: Jagged Alliance 3, Jagged Alliance 3D, and African Alliance, though that last game was cancelled just months after it was revealed. A deal for Game Factory Interactive to develop the series was dissolved a few years ago, shortly before Akella was announced as the new developer for the series, which now seems to be back to square one, or square three as it were.

Wait. Mods that remove the stupid railguns from the non-SciFi mode of JA2?

Why haven't I been told about this before? Why?!

(Good lord...still playing DA, Blood Bowl, just got Torchlight for $10...like six other games in the queue that I got on ridiculous Steam sales...and now I have to go play JA2 again. That's it. I'm canceling Xmas.)

I bought my copy off GoG. It's version 1.12, and the 1.13 mod worked fine, cant speak for other mods but I am sure they all work.

These might be worth checking out too, if the version you buy doesnt support the mods. I have not tried them myself but apparently they are close to final:

Like I said, I've been playing the game recently (JA2 with 1.13) and you get no help from militia when taking new towns. The only time that applies is when you take a sector and rarely have enough loyalty to start training.

1.13 sounds great. I need to buy this game again. Do the patches and mods work if I buy it off of Impulse? And has anyone tried the fanmade campaigns like Urban Chaos and Deidranna Lives (http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/ )? Worth playing?

Usually you must take the at least half the town if not the whole place (Alma) before you can train anyone, and 90% of the time the enemy counterattacks before you can finish.

It is a very difficult game, I'm playing on normal (experienced?) and just started encountering Dedriana's elite troops with sniper rifles and grenade launchers and I am having a hell of a time taking sectors with a full squad of good mercs, so I think I'm going to hire another squad and start doing simultaneous attacks from multiple directions.

That would be like saying, don't use re-spawning health kits or night vision goggles in that FPS, it makes the game too easy.

No. Health kits and NVGs are an integrated part of FPS gameplay. Whereas the strategic layer of JA2 (where you train the militia) is a segregated portion of the game, and has little impact on the tactical missions you perform when taking over new sectors in JA2.

Try harder, and this time don't ignore my other points (like how your exploit doesn't work on higher difficulties).

There's a great difference when playing a 'turn based game' with another person 'in person' vs. playing a video game's typically predictable and exploitable AI. For example, in JA 2, all you had to do was let time pass and your own AI training (of citizens) could be exploited to nearly win the entire game by simply skipping moves.

1. Just because a videogame is turn based doesn't mean it's single player only.

2. The tactical game is the heart of JA, and the expansion (JA2:UB) doesn't even have a strategic layer. You can't even use trained citizens in JA2 to take over new sectors, so your complaint isn't even leveled at the majority of the game. Also, if you play the game on a hard enough difficulty, your trained citizens don't stand a chance against the shitstorm of elite grey troops that the AI sends your way, and you don't have nearly enough $$$ to just sit on your ass and train.

3. Also, if lame exploits make the game boring, why don't you stop using them? You might as well complain that any game with cheat codes/editors is boring. The option exists for you to play without them.

Terrible example.

Not really surprising. Akella dumped the game back in Februari:

It's a shame, both games were absolutely great.

Funny that you enjoy chess, considering that your one and only criticism of turn based video games can also be applied to the board games that you listed.

I started playing chess since the third grade. I've been playing it on and off for decades ever since.

It's pretty obvious when I refer to turn based games it's about video games.

I'm also not referring to checkers, backgammon, cards, Risk, Monopoly, nor any another primarily non-video game.

Hired Guns: Jagged Edge really had TONS of potential to be the next JA but they were missing one huge element - interesting characters and their plentiful, excellent dialog.

Sad to hear JA series has chased the footsteps of Duke Nukem.

Turn Based Game - Civ 4 - sold heaps, lots of people must not find it that boring.

I played chess 2 days ago with my best mate (although I only play a on a dozen or so times a year, some time not at all)

I've never played any of the JA games.
