Pandemic Closure: Blame California

Kotaku has a chat with EA CEO John Riccitiello that focuses on the recent closure of Pandemic's offices. John explains that the high costs of operating in California was a major factor in the decision to close their offices and transfer what remained of their staff to EALA, which is less than ten miles from Pandemic's studios. They ask if poorly reviewed games factored into this but John says the location was the main problem. When they ask why these considerations didn't prevent EA from acquiring Pandemic, he explains: "The shift toward fewer titles and the acceleration towards digital is moving faster [than expected]."

Here is a picture I took at the last "Illegals" rally for more free Government handouts in California.....

He was chanting "We need more Government assistance to help our 6 children!"

Gah... I hate to say this... But government aid to "undocumented" immigrants is equivalent to something like 25% of the 20 billion or so that this state's deficit will be over the next five years or whatever the number was. Ah-nuld called that number "insignificant".

We spend a FORTUNE on education (Something absurd like 40% of the state's budget goes to education) and yet our schools suck ass.

I'm a native of CA, and usually a pretty staunch liberal, but even I have my limits. Common sense has to take precedence, and CA is bullshiat right now. Ah-nuld is a dickhead too and just as responsible for this as anyone in the state congress.

Some of you don't know what "socialism" really is; you just like throwing the word around because Rush Limbaugh says it a lot.

OK I was beginning to think the word had recently had its definition changed or something. Glad I'm not the only one.

All of it looks like that.

The question is can you afford to live there.

Those are beautiful shots, no doubt.

But my hometown, New York City, looks pretty beautiful from afar too. At least to me. But I don't think I'd ever move back.

Did you find the homosexual men too sexy for your liking?

LOL! Damn, you got me...

I can only speak to the time when I was there in '99, but acquaintances tell me it hasn't changed, except maybe for the worse. Nauseating political correctness abounds, gangs are everywhere in major cities, the taxes are obscene, driving anywhere is a nightmare, and yes, it defines Socialism.

I know, I know, I must be a mindless ditto-head...

Prez,

Got something against the ocean, sunshine, beautiful women, and year-round near perfect weather? Can you give you anything specific vs. a hate speech about California? Did you visit the beaches? Did you find the homosexual men too sexy for your liking? Do share ...

I wouldn't live or work in California if someone gave me a house, free car, and high-paying job. The little time I spent there by necessity when I was in the military proved every single stigma associated with California that I had heard about. I had always thought, "It can't be that bad." To my dismay, it really was. Apologies to those who live there or who have lived there in the past, but I'd rather move my family to another country than move them to California.

Pandemic might not have been helped by the ridiculously high costs involved with being stationed in California, but to blame that as the number one reason for their demise is just silly. I do regret their closing more than most here, as I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Reign 2, Battlezone 2 and Full Spectrum Warrior.

Living in the bay area, I absolutely loved California. I have yet to find any other location with as nice weather and the ability to, within two hours of driving in a given direction, experience beach, swamp, snow, desert, plains, mountains, redwoods, etc.

Of course, that isn't to say that it doesn't have a bit of a zany budget and unhealthy cost of living, particularly in regards to housing itself. Although I would argue that, in many ways, it's simply an exaggerated or accelerated magnification of what this country is generally going through.

I am endlessly amazed at this country's acceptance of housing and banking being the holy grails of economic growth. Who cares about education? Who cares about industry? Who cares acount science? Who cares about the future?

As for Pandemic itself, let's be honest - it was not a very good developer. At the very least, it was not a strong competitor. Coupled with it's location, this economy, and other factors, this company's flaws affected it much more and/or sooner than other companies.

What Pandemic games were the pinnacle of perfection? Revolutionized games? Had few, if any, flaws? Averaged a 90% or higher review? Would be viewed as the leader of their respective genre at time of release? Didn't have to rely on the "It's not an amazing game, but it's kind of fun now and then..." argument?

Looking at all the games it had a part in, maybe two of them actually piqued my attention. Yet in both cases, the games were flawed, I had better or more intriguing games to play in comparison, and I was not immediately sold on their premise.
Poor socialism. Disregarded as handouts. No recognition of community advancement.
If this developer consistently released great games in a timely manner that sold well, California would be a non-issue. Conversely, if you wan to champion the California argument, what of Pandemic's decision to be located in California in the first place?

Really, really, really disliking EA,
Ray

i lived in california most of my life. yes it is expensive to live here because of the taxes but try comparing the infrastructure of california to another state with little or no state tax. it simply does not compare.

and to the person who mentioned texas as business friendly. that is true simply because the entire state does not have an effective master plan. a visit to houston will reveal residential homes intermingled with industrial and manufacturing facilities on the same street. there is practically no zoning law in texas. no rules to follow.

I live in California & have my own business. Here are a few known facts for you all.

FACT: More businesses left California than any other state in the nation in 2008.

FACT: California has the highest business taxes & regulations in the nation.

FACT: California has the highest sales tax, payroll taxes, & gas tax in the nation.

FACT: In 2008 California lost just under 150,000 middle class tax payers to other states.

FACT: California was rated as one of the worst business friendly states in the nation. Texas was rated number one as the best place to start a business.

FACT: California is rated as one of the worst states in education & L.A. county currently holds a drop out rate of 52%.

I have been a long time tax fighter here in California & currently we are working on getting a part time legislature in California to help with all our budget problems & asinine laws. Oh and by the way California is over 10 BILLION in the red already for 2010....It just does not get any better here!

Ain't Socialism grand? This is what a large percentage of the US population wants to see happen in the entire US, btw.

Yay Socialism!

On a sidenote, you do have absolutely ridiculously fucking hot women in Cali. So there's that.

@Hump

Cali is a socialist mecca. One of the highest tax rates in the country yet they have to give folks IOU's for their tax refunds.

Somebody has to pay for all those that are unemployed... since a low percentage of those are actually willing to be employed. The "aid" system in this state is a joke. We continue to rewarding losers for dropping out, for getting knocked up at sixteen, and for having more children just so that they can have more "aid". People no-longer come here to find work... they come here to work the system.

A couple years back there was a large exodus of Asians to a north eastern state because their "aid" system was even easier to work than the one the state of California has in place. You know how I heard about it? An Asian guy I work with told me about it. LoL!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying all those living off the system are leeches but a majority are.

Anyway, I believe at least part of his claim... but on the other hand they did make a lot of mediocre games.
