Pandemic Closure Confirmed

Pandemic's Drew Marlowe tweets a confirmation of the earlier rumor that Pandemic Studios has been closed by Electronic Arts (thanks Shacknews). This inspires Infinity Ward's Mikey Neumann to tweet: "Well, if anyone from Pandemic would like to work at Gearbox, we'd love to have you! http://bit.ly/3pfdFb Sorry, about a lousy day :/" Here's word from Drew Marlowe's tweet:
It's official, pandemic is shut down as of today. Thankfully it looks like we are getting decent severance.

Even though they haven't been a strong PC developer in a while, I can't help but feel sad at the death of the publisher who gave us Battlezone 2 and Dark Reign 2. I also enjoyed Full Spectrum Warrior and the SW Battlefront series.

RIP some console dev.
Yeah, "some console dev" that happened to make a few of some of the better games of the decade... Star Wars: Battlefront/II, Full Spectrum Warrior/Ten Hammers, Mercenaries/2, Destroy All Humans. The console apathy in that statement is pretty ridiculous, considering Pandemic was one of the best developers for any platform.

Hmm, thats confusing. Infinity wards blankety blank says wed love you at Gearbox. /me scratches his head.

As for not closing due to recent announcement. Believe me. Its closed. That is EXACTLY what happened at Origin Software. When I was there they said "were moving you to EA-LA and were consolidating". Then everyone was gone. They kept most of the original UO team but the rest of the company... poof, gone. How are those latest Origin games anyways? It really toughed out the consolidation didnt it?

Edit: And I agree. Business is business. This what they do. I have no personal issues with them doing such things. But like most folks, i think getting laid off sucks.

Yea publishers need to run efficiently and effectively but along with that comes the question why is the studio inefficient and ineffective?

Pandemic took almost 4 years to release Mercenaries 2 and the game seemed like an early Alpha stage release. The Lord of the Rings game was a huge quality step down after Battlefront.

While that is true, ultimately it's EA responsibility. If EA didn't like the crap that was Merc 2, then why did they fund LotR, and then The Saboteur?

You complaining about how people on the boards "always want to side with the little guy" is asinine. It's EA's fault. EA allows - even endorses it (by way of further funding) these stupid projects, never holding the devs to a higher standard.

For years EA has been gobbling up devs and having them put out crap to make a quick buck. Now that EA is hemorrhaging cash like crazy, they're running around cutting everyone and everything. Should have cleaned up this mess before it got like this.

I run into this crap all the time at work. My bosses are all reactive, not pro-active. Same with EA. They could have fixed this long ago, but they don't want to.

Mercs 2 was rushed out by the publishers, and mercs 1 was amazing.

EA sucks! How dare they close underperforming divisions of their company.

Lol... exactly. The rage I see on the blogs today is the best example of "I MUST SIDE WITH THE LITTLE GUY ALL THE TIME" I have seen in a long time.

Pandemic took almost 4 years to release Mercenaries 2 and the game seemed like an early Alpha stage release. The Lord of the Rings game was a huge quality step down after Battlefront. The Saboteur must not have market success written on it or else this would have been put off a bit. These people did not seem to work well after their aquisition, so they were let go. Anyone here running a company would do the same.

Actually EA now issued a statement saying it's not "closing" the studio, but relocating/consolidating them to EALA, where Pandemic will continue with less people.

But srsly, the games P made Mercs 2 and LotR were very weak, so it shouldn' come as a surprise.

new EARS management puts the untrained movie makers in charge of making games, movie talent in charge of most departments in EALA, forcing the people that created Medal of Honor to work for them, a lot of them are forced out or quit or out right fired.

Ah... so they put Ewe Boll in charge. That explains a lot.
